Para5-0 0 #26 October 31, 2009 It is unbeleivable I am reading this after last weekend. On a Quasar student rig, I watched a level 6 student exit in a middle float solo position. after getting stable he initiated a back loop. At the time I did not notice but after reviewing the video the right riser cover came undone and was flapping in freefall. The risers were exposed and also started to flap around, causing the toggle to unstow as well as pull out at least 6 feet. Trailing above student. On deployment the toggle wrapped the bridle above the D-bag causing a complete streamer with chute out. Student initiated cutaway and had clean release deployment. This has not happend before on these rigs and we have only two of them online. Needless to say they are grounded. They are both older rigs.
Bill_K 0 #27 November 1, 2009 Thank you for your post!! I was on a solo head down last weekend working on my body position, etc. I noticed that something did not feel right on my left side probably 25-30 seconds into it. Being solo I went to my belly and slowed down and took a look; sure enough my riser cover was flapping and my toggle starting to work loose. I ended the skydive early and had a little longer canopy ride. As soon as I felt it in free fall I thought of this thread, which I had just read like two days prior. Thank you for taking the time to post this, I don't know if my experience would have gotten worse or not, but thanks to you I had thought about it before hand and knew enough to get off my head and deal with it. So thank you again! BK

I hope people pay attention to this as well, because I can't count the number of student rigs that I've seen in service with riser covers that come undone (even in the plane before exiting). This is extremely scary! This could easily have gone differently and ended up with the same situation I dealt with. I can't imagine having to deal with something like this as a student. Fortunately it still extracted the cutaway main. Can you imagine a horseshoe as a student? I know students are trained for it, but as this is the nightmare scenario for all skydivers, we'd want to be armed with experience on our side for this one! surfrgrl1 0 #29 November 2, 2009 No, thank-you for posting as well! It seems like a pretty common starting point scenerio. I'm really glad it worked out for you and that this thread was able to help. Ideally, if anyone knows of a rig that is absolutely bulletproof in freefall, please send me the name... Or on the other hand, if someone is inspired to make one, it seems like you will have lots of customers!
