GeordieSkydiver 0 #1 May 12, 2005 A friend of mine dislocated his shoulder this week, in freefall. He has 30 (ish) jumps. He did it coming out of a backloop at about 8000ft. Unfortunately it was his right arm, so he couldn't deploy with that hand. He waited till 4k then deployed his main by reaching around the front!! of his body and grabbing the toggle. He did LH turns and a no flare landing into wind without further injury. (big 220 student canopy) He then dropped his rig and walked the 700m back to the hangar. Try and reach your hackey/toggle with your left hand...Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk
mattjw916 2 #2 May 12, 2005 well, that IS one of the reasons the reserve handle is located on the left side... not that I relish going to my last chance first, and at terminal, OUCH!NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
calledisrael 0 #3 May 12, 2005 i dislocated my right shoulder on my last jump... and am quite impressed. i did a bunch of left hand turns and landed no-flare just fine... but i can't imagine in that situation having reached over to pull my main with my left. i wasn't going to mess with it - going straight to reserve for me. i did lose the handle, unfortunately; begged them to let me look for it, but alas, no... props to your friend for good thinking - and a quick recovery. life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. meltdown 0 #5 May 13, 2005 Yikes. No flare landings suck. I popped my left shoulder on a no wind day in Eloy and landed hard about 1/2 mile from the DZ. I must've bounced 10 feet, and I'm only loaded 1:1! Nice job getting the canopy out in that situation.
crashintou 0 #6 May 13, 2005 I did the same thing during my first solo, dislocated right shoulder, coming out of a backloop and at 8K ft. I somehow deployed with my right arm and I tried to reduce the dislocation under canopy but couldn't. Good thing for left-handed landing patterns, and I did do some sort of partial flare with both arms. If it were to happen again I think I would just save myself the pain and use my reserve.
