strange weather forecast

Recommended Posts

All right figure this one out. Right now (it may change over time of course but look at it right now) here is the aviation weather forecast for Vacaville, CA (VCB):

The Vacaville, California Aviation Weather Report and Forecast - Wind Speed, Temperature, Wind

Look at the column under Sunday June 7 at 11am. They are forecasting 'clear' conditions but ceilings between 3,000 and 6,500! Figure that one out!

(ps I just attached a screen capture so people can see what I mean if the forecast changes!!)

Cloud bases can be calculated by the temp/dewpoint spread. I forget the numbers (it's been a while since CFI school), but the temp drops at a different rate than the dewpoint under standard conditions.

I think they put up where the bases would be no matter what.

Aviation Digital Data Service (ADDS)
Output produced by TAFs form (1043 UTC 06 June 2009)
found at http://adds.aviationweather.gov/tafs/index.php

You entered "KVCB"
Sorry, either there are no data available for your request or you did not enter any valid ICAO airport abbreviations.
See stations.txt for a list of known METAR and TAF locations. Then go back to the ADDS METARs or TAFs page and try again

Please try again and, if problems persist, then send mail to ncep.awc.adds@noaa.gov

See there really is no aviation forcast for Vacaville Ca.

If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.

I just got back into work this morning, and I'm trying to take a look at your attachment and its a little fuzzy to me. That station doesn't put out a taf, but I am looking at metars from the past 24hrs.

I don't even have an explanation because I am not familiar with that website, and what model/grids they use to get that output from. I know I've said it in other posts, but I'll throw it out there again-- your best bet for weather info is probably going to be NOAA.gov, and then the next best in my opinion out of the private sector websites is weather underground. Or, you can always PM your friendly neighborhood avitaion weather forecaster and I'll be happy to give you an outlook. ;)

Edited to add-- I was bouncing around our database here at work and was trying to find a few other stations in the area that might issue TAF's, and the closest major patch of asphalt issueing a forecast is KSJC. There might be one closer but it would take some digging and I don't have the time right now to do more research on it.

KVCB: Vacaville Nut Tree 38.23N 121.58W
KSJC: San Jose Intl 37.22N 121.56W

Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

Not a conspiracy "nut", hey if the powers that be need to enhance our ozone, because of us nearly 6Billion souls, on this shrinking little planet. All the power to them! Even up here in the northern hemispere, I need to put on SPF 50, so's I don't get burned. The least that can be done is honesty, clearity & forthrigtness,"we the people" have the right to know.

Saturday's actual weather showed how you shouldn't rely on forecasts ... except for the period of high/gusty winds in the late afternoon, and some bumpy winds up high all day, the weather at Skydance on Saturday was about as perfect as it gets this time of year. I don't think it broke 75 and the only clouds to worry about were high, puffy, and out of the way.

Thanks--glad to hear it was a great day--I wasn't there but the weather forecast wasn't the reason. The primary reason was that I slightly sprained my ankle a couple of weeks ago. It is mostly healed by this point, but was still bothering me a bit, so I decided to give it one more week.
