airtwardo 7 #26 May 12, 2009 Quote Quote That's the kind of Skydiving CLUB that I started at in 1976. 10 guys each put up a grand and bought a 182, they 'occasionally' taught students and did demos to pay for fuel and the annual... As long as there was a $ reserve in the coffers for that stuff ...FREE JUMPS! *I didn't join USPA until a few years after I started because I didn't need to....there were always magazines lying around the clubhouse. The world and skydiving has changed. Getting together, buying an airplane, etc. wasn't all that uncommon "back in the day" (which by the way was before my time in the sport). I started a thread in the History forum detailing dropzones in Kansas over the years. There were quite a few "plane, grass strip, and a shade tree" DZs over the years. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3204702;search_string=kansas;#3204702 My guess though is that most skydivers these days would prefer an Otter and indoor plumbing with the accompanying USPA required membership to a C182 with no door or step and shit'n in the weeds. Martin Hey...We were no nickel & dime operation......we had a STEP! & I saw your Kansas thread awhile back, I was in Baldwin back in 81-82. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

Hi Don't understand your fixation with "shitting in the weeds" sounds like you been taking the kids to potty. So listen up here's the way it was back in the day.We were adults and knew we were going to be at the DZ all day without facilities, did our stuff before we left the house. Gotta piss? Lots of fence posts in Ks. In a emergency DQ was a 10 minute ride into town. The wives usually made a "food run" in the afternoon. The cows didn't have a distance rule they would do their thing all over the LZ, it was theirs. OTOH we did have 2 runways and a pea gravel pit. The gravity was always there, even in Ks. Trouble was if you ate one of the refrigerated burritos from QT and didn't get the damn thing hotter than hell all the way through, you wouldn't be able to get back to QT in time!Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. zipplewrath 1 #33 May 13, 2009 And this is the source of the problem. You're right one "has" to belong to USPA. Oh, you can get around it here and there, but ultimately some boogie, some competition, some DZ is going to demand it and offer to sign you up on the spot. Which is why folks say you "have" to belong to jump. Functionally, it's true. The only reason it's true is because DZ's want you to have liability insurance. Some smart critter is going to figure out one day that just like the car rental companies, there's money to be made in them thar liability policies. And then those DZO's with so much to protect are going to figure out it's a better deal to require their jumpers to buy it from them, than to let USPA get the cash. A daily, weekly, or monthly policy could be fairly easy to sell. Especially in places where jumping is limited to 6 months or so. About that time USPA ain't gonna have nearly the clout they have had. They might even kill the GM program about that point. Heck, they'd be forced to go back to serving the weekend jumper. Then most of them would stop running for office.
