Can you see your pilot chute under canopy?

Recommended Posts

I can & do all the time.
I think it shows my head is truly on swivel.

I mentioned it this weekend to some people & asked them. Not many said they had seen it.

Late in the day a jumper with about 35 jumps came to me & said, ya! I could see it!

I think it shows you CAN see above & behind.

Thoughts?

When they say you can't see above and behind you they're talking about somone being above and behind your canopy, not the pilot chute. It's like driving down the highway in someones blind spot, where they can't see you with their mirrors. I just happen to have a picture. You'll notice you can't see Tony's head under they canopy below my feet, that means he can't see me either. He knew I was there because we could clearly see each other during the rest of the canopy flight, and he could see my shadow also.

I've only ever lookied for it after my course with Brian G. when he told us about turn co-ordination. When the pliot chute normally shifts to one side of the canopy in a normal toggle turn. But when you combine toggle turns with harness input, the pilot chute should trail in a straight line behind the canopy.

But I only tried looking a couple of times, because those kinds of turns put my canopy into a crazy-fun, scare-the-bejesus-outta-me dive. I wanna be looking at where I'm going when I do those, lol.

Yes, it sounds like you're talking about this in reference to seeing traffic around you. Is that correct? If so, I commend you on your awareness. I use some of my scanning time looking for canopies above too, mostly swoopers setting up for a 270 over the approach end of the landing area.

Supposedly low man has right-of-way, but people seem to be forgetting that more and more. If I did see some one above and behind spiraling down into me, I'm not sure if I'd know which way to turn.:S

Damn, canopy time used to be so relaxing.[:/]

I saw it wrapped around my wrist once .... that was a fun jump!!!!

I saw it wrap around my mid section once... (my first hop & pop...) I got it off of me before it inflated though... :P:D

Mine pulled the pin and Horse-shoe'd - pulled me upright with my arm above my head .... no AADs or RSL then.. I eventually managed to pulled my hand out of the mess and reached for my handles and the main inflated loverly... landed not very much later.... heart pumping (which is a good thing, I've decided!!)
