Student with winter approaching

Recommended Posts

So i made my first jump about mid summer and was on a decent track to get my A before fall. But then work, weather, and life caught up with me. Now i haven't made a jump in almost 2 months. I have 10 logged and am onto my 15sec ff from starting at static line. The weather has been in the 40's rainy and windy. Saturday looks to be nice, 61, sunny and calm. But my thought is whether to keep making jumps this year or wait till next year. My worry is that i'll have to repeat one or a few jumps the next time i go. And if thats my last day before winter i don't want to have to repeat more in the spring. What do you guys think? Is it worth getting my jumps in regardless of whether they end up counting for my A or not?

As long as your having fun jumping why would you wait? If its going to be your last chance to do a jump for 5 or 6 months you should get out there and enjoy yourself while you can!

ALL your jumps will count towards your A license.

What you're worrid about is your training progression.

After 2 months, your DZ will probably want you to repeat your last jump anyway.

Since you didn't fill out your profile....I assume you are in the North somewhere where they close down for winter.
Best bet is to hurry up and complete your training now and do a re-currency jump when you come back in the Spring.

or,

if you are free to travel a little, go to a DZ in the South that doesn't close down and finish your training there.

In the meantime, get yourself a Skydiver Information Manual (SIM) and study up.
My reality and yours are quite different.

Read your SIM. (You have a SIM, don't you?). After 30 days off, you have to do a practice pull to get recurrent.
Don't be so sure you this will be your last jump before winter. My first year, the winter had a very slow start. I made jumps right up to Christmas.

GO JUMP!!:)

Ya thats kinda what i thought, i'm gonna head out early tomorrow morning and hope for the best all day. I don't have a SIM where do i get one? That is one thing about our DZ our main instructor is 78 and an awesome guy but i feel a bit more like hes a "suit up and go guy" than explaining everything. I've jumped with two other instructors and i felt i actually "learned" alot more with them. Unfortunately they aren't around very often. I'd love to get something to study, i think it would help with my confidence a bit as well, i still psych myself out a bit at times.

as far as the instructor thats "suit up and go", remember that it's your dive. Feel free to stop him and ask what's going on? what's he doing? and any other questions you have. knowledge is power, and as students we need to soak up every bit that we can get. plus, or at least with me, the more I learn in this sport, (good and bad), the more it settles my stomach. this world is filled with resources for you to tap, your instructors, the SIM, this website, you tube even. I look up moves and techniques that I need to learn on there all the time, especially for the next aff jump I'm about to do. It helps me take some of the guess work out of what I need to do... sorry for the speech, just a little vocal today, lol.
