orangemagoo 0 #1 March 5, 2005 Hello, I'm new, so be kind. I'm not sure I belong in this thread. I got my license in December, and I have 35 jumps now. I love this sport! I had a hard time getting past my hop-n-pops. They really freaked me out because of the low altitude. It almost kept me from getting my license. But I pushed through it, and I'm glad I did. Now that I have my license, reality has hit: I know NOTHING. Ahhhh...the new fear to replace the old. I also realize how much time and money is involved to be skilled at this sport. I'm worried that I won't have enough blue skies/time/cash to learn at the rate I need to learn. I don't want to constantly be a "scary jumper" because I can't get enough jumps in to learn what I need to learn. On top of that, I'm not sure what size I should be jumping. I weigh around 118-120. I'm working my way down to a 170 right now from a 190. (I have to jump what I can get my hands on...rental rigs). I can't get back to the DZ on anything bigger than a 190. I've got some people telling me I'm ready for a 150 because I'm so light. That seems like too much to fast. I've only jumped a 170 three times. Stood them all up, but still... Any suggestions? Thanks!

Stood them all up, but still... You'll find lots of people giving you advice. And, at your stage it's easy to think of everyone with more than 200 jumps as an expert. Make sure you know and trust the people you take advice from, get more than one opinion and don't do anything quicker than you are comfortable with. Also, keep in mind that, when you are jumping with other people you may well end up having to wear weight. You won't be quite so light then. ivan

It took me until jump #200 or so to realize that I knew nothing. >I've got some people telling me I'm ready for a 150 because I'm >so light. That seems like too much to fast. There's no reason to jump a smaller canopy if the 170 is getting you back OK and works for you. That loading is a good loading to learn about flat turns, rear riser landings, low turn recovery etc on. Once you're comfortable with all that you may be ready to move on to a smaller canopy. orangemagoo 0 #5 March 6, 2005 Thanks! Yes, I think I'll stick with the 170 for a while. I need to work on my upper body strength, though. I have some issues trying to work the risers.
