Definition of a skydive?

Recommended Posts

Guys before i start let me apologise if this has been asked before. I managed finally a couple of weeks ago to pull my finger out, and do a S/L jump.

Some of my mates seem to think a S/l isn't really skydiving as you jump/fall/leap or stumble out of a plane, get your chute pulled for you and float to earth, versus a jump from higher altitude with longer freefall tandem or otherwise. So what do you reckon, is S/l skydiving? I hope I haven't rattled anyones cage with this noobie question.:)

You left an aircraft in flight, right when the plane was seemingly still working?

Well then, I wonder what else you have to do to make a skydive? Get your SCR, Gold Wings or compete in your first 4-way scrambles?

How many jumps does your friend have?

Now you have a jump under your belt ,get back out there and get to your 5-second delays. Thats when the fun *really* starts and you start performing maneuvers, then jumping with other people...

Yes it's a skydive as are all methods. I think the real difference pertains to whether you call yourself a skydiver or not. Doing any kind of jump once or twice does not make you a skydiver, just someone who has done a skydive. Continuing to jump whether by tandem or training makes a skydiver.

From the SIMs:

A “skydive” is defined as the descent of a person to
the surface from an aircraft in flight when he or she
uses or intends to use a parachute during all or part
of that descent.

S/L fits that definition.

why do you care?

do you jump for yourself, or just to impress your friends?

the more you jump, hopefully, the less it matters what other people think about it - especially non-jumpers. It's about the sport and the enjoyment of the sport, not about self image. The 'ego/image' guys are always short timers - a couple hundred jumps and they leave. And usually males too, for that matter. AND, they usually are the ones to do the really stupid stuff.
