peanutgallery 0 #103 July 9, 2008 QuoteI AM a dog lover, but I also have had the misfortune of having to deal with three dog bites at the DZ in an 18 month period. (Dogs were not allowed then either) Yes, the owners claimed they are nice dogs, yes they were either tied up or on leash and according to the owners none had ever bitten before. HOly shit dude, this seems a little crazy to me! What the hell are you doing to these dogs? Anyway, this debate is more turning into responsible pet owners vs. not responsible pet owners. People who are saying they've encountered dog crap in the landing area and dogs walking through the packing area....that's ridiculous and the dogs themselves shouldn't be blamed, it's the owners. That's not the kind of situation I was asking about when starting this thread, I don't agree with dogs walking all over the dz AT ALL. I will reiterate, my dog is quiet, tied up out of the way and picked up after. She mostly just lays in the shade all day. I really don't see how that can cause a problem for anyone. Unless of course, you go over and yank on her tail or something and she bites you.I used to have a handle on life, but it broke
ladyhawke 0 #104 July 9, 2008 I think allowing dogs at the dz is fun for most people! They can be quite entertaining! I have 2 Eskies that I would love to bring with me, however, they require attention and AIR CONDITIONING! I must say tho I always feel a little sorry for the doggie I see tied up to a tree all by its lonesome. Quote What the hell are you doing to these dogs? Perhaps a better question is what owners should be or should not be doing with their dogs. None of these animals were provoked. Simply stated if your DZ allows for dogs then by all means go for it, (but be a responsible pet owner) This DZ however, does not. So kindly leave your pets at home. froglady 0 #107 July 9, 2008 A few of the camper owners bring their dogs to Orange, works well since the dogs have a cool comfy place to stay during jumping operations. In the evening you'll see them around on leashes but never in the hanger. Personally I leave my dogs at home, pet sitter comes mid afternoon to let them out cost us $15. I can relax at the DZ and their much happier to be at home anyway.

Unless of course, you go over and yank on her tail or something and she bites you. OK, two things come to mind with your post- first is you never know what can spook a normally calm even tempered dog/ animal. And there is an awful lot going on in and around the hangar at any given drop zone. Its not just agressive dogs that bite. In my experience, even a sweet gentle dog will bite when he is frightened or in pain. And 2nd- OF COURSE this thread about responsible pet ownership! If every person who brought their dogs out to the DZ was responsible, looked after their dogs, cleaned up after them and kept them from becoming nuisances, there would be no reason to even ask the question. Unfortunately, that just isn't the case and that's why dogs are not welcome at some DZs.

popsjumper 2 #116 July 12, 2008 ALL dogs at the DZ suck. Dogs at any DZ sucks. Dog shit everywhere. Fleas in the carpet. Skydivers bitten. Dog fights. Landing area collisions. Gear damage. Running amok. They are ALL guilty of one and/or the other regardless of how "sweet" you think your dog is. Can't figure out how to get to the DZ without bringing your dog? Leave it at home. Can't supervise your dog while you skydive? Leave it at home. Can't pick up your own dogs shit? Leave it at home. Can't figure out how to rid it of fleas? Leave it at home. Can't figure out how to keep it from biting somebody? Leave it at home. Can't control it? Leave it at home. There seems to be a running theme here...can you guess what it is? The alternative is to keep it away from the skydiving public. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. billeisele 130 #117 July 12, 2008 "The alternative is to keep it away from the skydiving public" it is not a dog (include child anywhere dog is written) problem it is a dog-owner problem, if you want to bring your dog and are willing to: - keep it on a leash - off the packing mat - out of the hanger -out of the landing area - clean up after it - take full financial responsibility for the dogs actions (she never bites, therefore you must have done something, therefore I'm not paying your medical bills - is bullshit) - keep it quiet - etc. fine, if not leave it home not everyone likes dogs or they may like dogs but not while jumping most owners are very responsible, it is the 10% that goof it up for the others
MikeForsythe 0 #118 July 12, 2008 Quote ALL dogs at the DZ suck. Dogs at any DZ sucks. They are ALL guilty of one and/or the other regardless of how "sweet" you think your dog is. Bull shit! “ALL”?....NOT! From what I read in your list if I put people in place of dogs the list reads more accurately for most of the list. My dog has never bitten anyone, goes to the bathroom when and where I tell her too and I have always cleaned up after her. Oh, I will bet her ass is cleaner than yours! She does not show up at the DZ with fleas but hates it when she has to sit in the plane with one of your friends with head lice that still smell of alcohol from the night before. She has never done drugs, caused any problems in the landing area or walked around the DZ in a drunken stupor or been stoned. She has never stolen anyone’s gear, spilled beer on it or anyone else for that matter nor has she puked on anyone’s gear. She doesn’t smoke or blow smoke in your face. She doesn’t try and sleep with everyone, act like a pervert or grope. She has never been in a fight at the DZ, stabbed, shot or been responsible for anyone dying. She has promoted the sport in a positive way locally, nationally and internationally. She has served mankind and her country and never so much as asked for a thank you. As a therapy dog she goes to children’s hospitals, schools and retirement homes and brings smiles and love to those that are there. She spent eight years searching for missing victims of disasters including 22 days at the WTC. She has been to over a hundred searches of missing children and people. Have you ever brought a small lost child back to the arms of a crying mother on her knees? She helped develop and train both civilian and military to jump with dogs. And when she is at the DZ she does not go up to people unless called but a lot of people seem to come up to her. She listens more than she talks and never brags. Can you say that about you? You can yell at her all you want in your anger, but then if you sit down on the ground and are sad she will quietly lay her head in your lap to make sure you are okay and help you feel better. She will never ask you to apologize for yelling at her. You are right Andy, who would ever want something like that around them………………..on second thought I would rather have her around the DZ then some of the people that I know that come there. I would tell her to give you the paw but she is better than that.Time and pressure will always show you who a person really is!
Andy9o8 2 #119 July 12, 2008 Everybody understands your points, Mike, we really do. But a DZ has to have a single policy that applies to everyone. Making exceptions, whether for the good dogs/owners or the bad dogs/owners, will only lead to...well...dogfights.
MikeForsythe 0 #120 July 12, 2008 QuoteBut a DZ has to have a single policy that applies to everyone. Okay, so what is wrong with having a policy/rule that if you, your dog or your kids behave appropriately you are welcome, if not then you have to leave. I have gone to places (not DZ's now) that will have printed rules like dogs have to be on a leash at all times, owners must pick up after their dogs, dogs that are aggressive or continually barking will be asked to leave. These are typical rules that are posted at the public beach, tiki bar and parks in the area where I live. They are fair and apply to everyone. In fact they have post with bags to pick up after your dogs. What is not acceptable about that policy? Now that I think about it, you are right in a way, the problem is that most DZ’s don’t have any posted rules. Maybe the balance would be to try and have posted rules like the ones above and see how they work.Time and pressure will always show you who a person really is! Andy9o8 2 #121 July 12, 2008 QuoteOkay, so what is wrong with having a policy/rule that if you, your dog or your kids behave appropriately you are welcome, if not then you have to leave. Because it's subject to the element of human discretion, leading to arguments over perceived uneven enforcement (whether too lax or too harsh). Plus, I don't like being in the no-win position of having to choose between keeping my mouth shut when Doggie gets out of line, or saying something and risk hard feelings.
MikeForsythe 0 #122 July 12, 2008 If it is so subjective then explain why it works so well in the public areas that I discussed? Do you also keep your mouth shut when people get out of line because you don’t want to hurt their feelings? Also as I stated later in my post, if you post specific rules like I said the city does it seems to be almost self governing. Most people tend to follow the rules if they know the rules or expectations and yes I know there will always be the jerk out there but that is the same anywhere. Again, it seems to work in other places.Time and pressure will always show you who a person really is!

tbrown 26 #125 July 13, 2008 QuoteOur dropzone has five dogs that run loose in the packing hangar and out. Most of them walk across the lines while we are packing. One of them, the 135lb rotti likes to lie down on your lines. We love them all. The only people who have problems with the dogs are one couple. I don't like dogs. Don't own one and never will. I come out to a dropzone to skydive. If somebody's dogs lay down on my lines I'd go fucking beserk - and no apologies. What I HATE about dog owners is that they suffer from this delusion that the rest of us have to love their fucking dogs. I got even more fed up with dogs at rock concerts, where all these fucking hippies let their dogs run around without leashes and shit all over the place. By the second day it was unbearable. One poor girl in sandals had a stinking footfull of dog shit. Then I awoke to find some fuckin' dog taking a shit right outside my tent door. So I bounced a beer bottle off the dog's ass. His hippie master came on the run, saying "Hey man !" (limited vocabulary), so I fired off another empty at his head (missed, for better or worse...) and told him there more where that came from if he didn't clean up his dog's mess. Fuck dogs, I hate 'em. Dropzones are for people. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
