New Dropzone Help

Recommended Posts

Ok everyones heard it before but this is what i have. I have a land lease at the local Airport and full suport of the Airport Authority along with City Councel. The Airport has very low traffic most of which is a flight school located right there. I have a 206 thats in the process of being converted as i type this thats owned and flown by a good friend of mine and business owner as well. He has agreed to fly jump runs for the cost of maintnence and fuel he has nothing better to do he just wants the hours... Also i think its an excuse to get away from his wife;)...... To top everything off i also have access to a turbin with the same agreement yep thats right a large turbin.. The elivation of the airport is 3300 ft. It is located an hour south of Vegas 2 hours west of Flagstaff 30 min east of Laughlin NV and Bullhead AZ and 45 min north east of Lake Havasu and Parker.. I need some guidence and help on this guys i would love to see this turn into a full dropzone... But honestly i have no idea what im doing....[:/]

I do believe that a commercial pilot's license is required for flying jumpers who pay for the jumps.

Has the plane been approved by the FAA to have the changes made to the door?

Those are just two things to start with. There's more...

But i still have no idea what i am doing....... Any help would be greatly apreaciated.. The DZ would be located in Kingman AZ the location of the famous Ripleys Ruber Band Ball Drop....

Ripley's Rubber Band Ball Drop?? Hmmm how big was the ball, and how high was it dropped? Sounds like some fun could be had with Skydive Arizona's Skyvan if the ball is as big as I'm thinking it is! >:(

The floating around out there somewhere........ I would try you tube or just do a vid search

Youtube wasn't much help. Lots of other world record rubber band balls that have superseded the one that was dropped. Some interesting videos though.

Wow, even came up empty on www.skydivingmovies.com

Oh, great. Here we go again! Maybe you should ask for some advice from the St Louis Skydiving Center, they have really done a good job.

Is the City Council and Airport Authority willing to commit to a long-term DZ in writing.
Have you set up a website.
Have you developed a waiver and had an attorney review it.
Have you created a FJC manual in line with the BSRs
Have you purchased student gear.
Do you have a rigger for student gear.
Do you know how to file NOTAMS.
Have you decided on an S&TA,
Have you decided how to run manifest, who will run it and how they will be compensated.
Have you figured out what and how to pay Instructors for classroom instruction and jump instruction.
What have you decided about tandems - are you going to buy tandem gear of do a share with TI's who bring their own gear.
Have you developed a budget.
How are you going to advertise and where.
If said pilot gets bored for a couple of weekend, what will you do to keep everyone jumping.
Will s/he let someone else fly the plane.
Will you have indoor carpeting for packing.
Will it have a separate classroom devoid of distractions.
Who cleans up the beer cans and vacuums the carpet after the weekend.
Who does the books and how will they be compensated.
What exactly is the cost of fuel and maintenance for this a/c per load.

Just a couple of things off the top of my head.

Thanks you very much your the list it will be a good go to from the base i already have started. As far as the city councel and the Airport Authority yes they are and part of that is a 99yr lease on the property. We chose the property based off the Airports master plan and what would be sutible to the Airports growth predictions. The rest ill start working on...

One word of advice.. ensure the 99yr lease includes "for the purpose of skydiving operations" even if it requires a lease amendment. Many a DZ has secured a 20 year lease and as the area around it grows and the city council & airport authority members change; more than one DZ has found themselves in the middle of a battle when the town folks gets to not liking a DZ in the area. Some DZ's have even found themselves being forced to shut down or move their skydiving operations 5/10 years later, but left to maintain their lease holding.

Explicit in writing always carries more weight than implicit in word when the battle begins.
