Who has the HIGHEST cutaway ratio?

Beats my 3 from 95 on a Pintail.

In deLand in about '92 when the South African (can't remember if it was 4 or 8 way) team was training, they all had Pintails. We used to make it a point to be out of the packing hangar as the Otter came around on jump run so we could catch the mals as they happened. It was a regular event, no fewer than one a load. Sometimes more. Mike in manifest would announce it. Ah, Pintails. Thanks for the memory jog.

It was ok if the canopy inflated before the brake lines came free from bungee on the slider. I didn’t find out about the bungee trick until I chopped it twice, which was the 5th and then 30th jump. On jump 95 one brake line set got free way too early and round the front they went. Same happened on jump 96, but after one fast rotation they slip free I chopped that one when I landed and bagged it after removing the risers and bag etc.

My ratio workouts at 1 in 316.75 that’s 8 over 2550 jumps, but 3 were on the Pintail and 2 from CRW. That leaves two line-overs and a Sabre that turned itself into an 8 cell after a very snappy open.

holy crap dude. mind me asking what type of mals you had?

The first was a tension knot on a student rig. The second was when my canopy exploded at the Richmond boogie, I didn't pack that one either. The third was because it was spinning and I didn't figure out what was causing it when I hit decision altitiude, found out after watching the video a few times the right brake was not set, my fault. The fourth was from flying headdown at 190 MPH in my Vector 1 with bad velcro on the riser covers, the right toggle came out about 5 feet and tied the slider, front and rear risers together in a knot, could steer but not flare. The fifth was a lineover that burned a hole in the bottom skin so it didn't flare right, the video is on here.

Damn...I hate when the brake doesn't get set! :) I've got that T-ShirtB|

We'll cheers to you man. Thanks for not dying. Had you been taking pictures on all of them you would almost have a full set of malfunctions to show a first jump course student :D

I'm trying to calculate my ratio, but my calculator keeps giving me a "divide by zero error" every time I try to figure it out.

You either need to make some jumps or take a math class.:P

I've got about 11 in 5030, or 1 per 457. One of those was packed by an idiot with 10 in 1000, I found out later.:S

I haven't had a malfunction in over 1,000 jumps now. Last one I had was the last time I packed. Since you've been packing for me I haven't had one yet! Thanks! B|

You don't even know the half of it! I wouldn't be able to jump unless he packed for me because my hands are so arthritic (lupus) I can't do it. Not to mention I don't have energy for both packing and jumping. John can pack both my parachute and his faster than most people can pack their one parachute. And he's very careful with the pack job so it opens nice and soft for me. That is love. :)

How does a lineover burn a hole in the bottom skin? Was the canopy inverted?

I don't know how it got the bottom instead of the top, but the hole is where the lineover started according to the video, maybe it's just a coincidence. The canopy also has a couple patches where I closed it in the zipper of my gear bag, oops. This time I had my rigger patch it with a different color so it would show. I call it Frankentron now. The brand new brakelines really stand out against the old HMA suspension lines.
