Scott Miller's Essential Canopy Control Class

Recommended Posts

I know this has probably been posted before, but I am going to do it again.

I took Scott Miller's Essential Canopy Control class this weekend and can't recommend it enough to anyone who hasn't taken it yet. I am very new to skydiving, but have read everything I can get my hands on about canopy control. I've studied and practiced everything in sections 6-10 and 6-11 of the 2005 SIM and didn't think that I could really learn much more from a basic canopy control class.

I thought wrong. Scott is a really mellow guy who knows his shit! No matter how much you screw up, he doesn't make you feel small and looks for positives in everything you do. He listens to YOUR reasons for doing certain things under canopy and then talks with you about what you did and what you could have done. I feel much more comfortable under my canopy since taking his class and have learned things about long spots, awareness, and low turns which will save my life at some point in my skydiving career.

Thank you Scott Miller and keep up the good work! :)

Randy,
I took his class las summer at 27 jumps. I was worried that I would hold back the class or waste all of our time. I could not have been more wrong. Scott's class is GREAT. I will do my best to make sure I get in his class again this year. I really think a class should be required for every new jumper.

I've heard good things about Brian Germaine's class also; however, I never took his class. Either way, I will be doing some more canopy classes this year.

Can one of you do a quick outline of the activities you did in the class?

I did a two day version of Brian's class- I think he actually would like longer, but that's harder to schedule. First day was all in class, covering the material in his book and anything else anyone wanted to know more about. A lot of psychology and the positive and negative roles your brain plays in canopy flight.

Second day was jumping - we did 7k HnPs, did some exercises up high, and then landed by him with a camera. He did an immediate individual review on the LZ, then we went back to the DZ for a group review of all the landings. By the middle of the day we had worked out the two aspects I was doing (most) wrong, and thus I got what I came for. Much of the theory stuff won't be applicable to me for another year or three.

I actually merely "lurked" one of Scott's classes (for the FIRST time) myself personally back at something like 650-700 jumps.

That's why my DZ is having Scott back only a few months after the first course he taught. Quite a few of us are taking his basic and advanced course again...and a couple of us are begging him to do more advanced one on one with us as well.B|

I think I could keep taking his course every month and learn new things every single time.

I took his class right around my 100th, and he was the distraction provided to get me pied for my 100th. :D I loved his teaching style and how he'd break down the landing and discuss it with you and give you objectives on each canopy flight to try. I can not wait to take another of his classes. B|

I haven't taken his class, although I'd like to.

But I did sit in on his seminar at PIA, about turbulence. Since that's a topic that I have a deep interest in (and probably a greater knowledge of than most skydivers, just because of some of the landing areas I've used), I didn't really expect to learn a lot. As others have said, I was wrong.

Scott knows what he's talking about, for sure. And he's very patient about explaining things, and good at making them understandable. If he's ever giving a course anywhere near me, I'll definitely try to make it. I might even try to fly out and take one somewhere not so near me.

I'm so glad to read all this. I'm signed up for his class here in Houston next month. Sounds like my money will be well spent.

$ well spent Randy! Glad you got a lot from it too. I've had so many residual benefits from that course..gave me the confidence and knowledge when I landing out at Titusville a few months ago..in someone's backyard. Also at Titusville, we were way off the dz and the "tips" I learned helped me make it back. Good stuff!
