If I'm not mistaken, if the cover is clear plastic, you're screwed. Best to get the cover replaced if you can't read it. Go ahead and try the compound but I don't know anything about it, at least you can't make it any worse if you can't read the altitude before you start.

Yeah. Get used to the fact that stuff like that is not gonna look shiny new for very long. You might soon ace your landings, but knock your alti on the side of the plane, and so on... Have a look at the experienced jumpers around you and their altis, helmets etc...!!

Yep... mine's got the usual nicks and scratches on it, and it's on its second cover too. The first got busted in some kind of freefall collision (minor) on break-off of a big way.

For the Altimaster II, you can buy replacement lenses that screw right in. I don't know how the other varieties work. Just use a rubber glove or something to give a good grip, and with the palm of your hand, unscrew the lens (counter-clockwise). Then replace with the new one. Be careful not to bump and knock off the needle inside, as that is an un-repairable item. While you have the lens off, write your name in there on the face so that no one will steal it.

I'm totally confident in my abilities to destroy almost any piece of equipment I pay for myself and I understand that nothing I use is gonna look new forever, it's just that it looks as if I hung out a car door at 90 miles an hour and dragged it face down on the asphalt! I really fucked that landing. On my graduation jump no less!

Or you can have Alti-2 replace it with a custom dial face... ;) and frankly, to the original poster, kind of I like landing downwind sometimes... it can be fun and is an important skill to have so that you don't feel it is necessary to make a panic turn low if you find yourself facing the wrong way on a landing some day.

At some point I'll have to land downwind again for whatever reason, I just don't think doing it on my seventh jump was brilliant.

I did get a "good job" from one of the instructors for not freaking out and trying to turn it around so close to the ground. I banged myself up and lost a few drops of blood but he told me I made the right choice to not turn.

No matter what I walked away and I'll be back this weekend.

The good news is now that your shit is scratched up, there is no reason why downwind landings can't be fun like they are supposed to be! ;)
