Flyfast 0 #1 January 20, 2008 This is right from the website: On January 31, 2008, at Perris Valley Skydiving, Luigi Cani will set a new world record for flying and landing the world’s smallest and fastest parachute ever built: The VX-37! Slightly larger than a twin bed sheet, the VX-37 is a prototype parachute, flying as fast as a human in terminal velocity. Stay tuned for pictures and video from his amazing flight! http://www.gofastsports.com/images/home/luigi.html Looks like fun!ZC OG

sparkin2003 0 #3 January 21, 2008 first " will set a new world record" MAYBE! Its done yet. Second It is not the smallest or the fastest parachute ever built.Good luck luigi
riggerrob 643 #4 January 21, 2008 Granted, it may not be the smallest or fastest parachute ever, but Luigi will be the first to LAND a parachute that size. All the other tiny parachute prototypes were cutaway - above normal deployment altitude - so the test jumper could land a reasonably-sized main. pirana 0 #5 January 21, 2008 That would seem to violate the laws of physics. Is the claim that he will be falling as fast with a deployed parachute as someone without one? Seems to me the statement is taking a bit of marketing-style license, probably in combining forward speed with descent and adding them to come up with a figure that is not apple-to-apples in comparison to the basic 120MPH of freefall." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Loic in his wingsuit docked on Luigi if I am not mistaken. Loic was in freefall (albeit in a wingsuit, granted), which means Luigi's glide ratio was similar to Loic's (in a wingsuit), at least long enough for the dock to happen. I don't know what type of vertical speed Luigi can achieve burying a front riser with his handkerchief of a canopy, but it's pretty scary... No. Re-read and you'll see that it says he will be flying at the same speed as a person falling at terminal. His forward speed will be similar to the speed of terminal velocity. He has already docked with a wingsuit flyer while flying the 'big' VX 39, so it's not hard to imagine him going even faster with the 37.

Brains 2 #9 January 21, 2008 On the website, one part says vx-37 then the other press release says JVX-37 which would fit a little better seeing how the press release follows along nicely with other slaton marketing. bigway 4 #10 January 21, 2008 ive watched him jump his tiny canopy a few times. rather funny when he lands it and packs it away in his little helmet. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .

Anyone who's been in skydiving for a day or two can tell you the typical Go Fast press releases have always used a wee bit of sensationalism. This one is no different. Having flown in a wingsuit alongside Jeff Provenzano under the Xaos 21 sq ft canopy, I can assure you that the forward/horizontal speed isn't at terminal velocity (120mph). Having seen Lugi jump and land the 39 on several occasions, it is indeed impressive but I doubt the 2 sq ft reduction in canopy size is going to be much of a challenge for him. As usual, I expect he will make it look easy to everyone watching. Now if he put those metal plates on the bottom of his shoes like the motorcycle guys do and landed on the runway with sparks flying out behind him, that would be cool."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

bigway 4 #17 January 22, 2008 I think his standard size canopy is a 79sqft red and silver one. As Scott said, the 2 sqft less for luigi will be hardly any difference to him. He has so many jumps on that 37/39sq ft as it is and he lands it well. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .

It had a lot of forward speed, but it didn't swoop nearly as long as some other, and significantly larger high performance canopies. Hmm. What is his objective in downsizing to the 37?=========Shaun ==========

BETO74 0 #24 January 22, 2008 Regardless of the 2 feet difference between canopies, I dont see many people trying what he is doing with such a little canopy, is not unheard off reaching freefall speeds under canopy whetehe is a front riser 720 turn or else, and please dont forget Chris Martin attempt that end up tradically to fly a 26 sq/ft canopy that was supposed to be cut away before landing it. If anything lets applaud his efforts to take it little steps at a time. Good luck to him.http://web.mac.com/ac057a/iWeb/AC057A/H0M3.html

I am not discounting what Lugi is doing at all, just addresing the question about the press release. The facts are that the canopy will not be flying at terminal speeds(120 mph) while in normal flight and I highly doubt it will be when he throws his turn to land it. I believe the highest clocked swoop speed was in the 97 mph range but to the best of my knowledge, no one has been officialy clocked at going through the gates at 120. Quoteand please dont forget Chris Martin attempt that end up tradically to fly a 26 sq/ft canopy that was supposed to be cut away before landing it I cannot forget what Jeff Provenzano and Chris Martin did under the 21 sq ft canopy as I was on both of those jumps.
