DSE 5 #54 February 1, 2008 LUIGI CANI SETS NEW WORLD RECORD (Perris, California) February 1, 2008 - Brazilian stuntman Luigi Cani soars into history once again by landing the smallest, fastest parachute in the world! At just 37 square feet, the JVX-37 by NZ Aerosports is smaller than a twin bed sheet and flew at speeds over 100mph! In a class all his own, Cani is motivated by the challenge of breaking through boundaries to redefine the limits of extreme skydiving. As a leader in the sport of skydiving and canopy piloting, Cani helped pioneer competition parachute swooping under high-performance parachute wings for years. The average jumper's parachute is 300-500 percent larger than the JVX-37. This jump was particularly dangerous because a canopy this small has never been landed, thus there was no way to predetermine the speed at which he would impact the ground. Luigi has set two previous world parachuting records, holds the current world freefall record at 343mph, and recently jumped a motorcycle off the Grand Canyon, BASE jumping to the bottom. Live2Fly 0 #56 February 2, 2008 The craziest part of the whole thing was not the landing. It was how long that canopy stayed in a dive (with him pretty much horizontal to it) after he did a few spirals and then stopped turning. I've never seen anything like it! diablopilot 2 #58 February 2, 2008 Quotegreat!:) I just wonder - what is the guy's regular canopy?:) IIRC he pretty regularly was jumping a VX in the low 70 square foot range for competition, but that was with quite a bit of lead. I'd like to see a comparison of the VX39 and the JVX37 laid out together.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. packerboy 3 #59 February 2, 2008 Lol.. his outstretched arms aren't much smaller than the wingspan of the canopy! bigway 4 #63 February 2, 2008 JC is a real Badd Ass. Use to watch him pulling some sick swoops when he was test jumping for Jyro. I had to organize a demo team to jump at a hot air balloon festival.... The day it was on JC pulled up and plans changed that fast. The demo team then turned into Laszlo, Attilla, Wendy and JC. JC was a nutter on our farm yard dropzone.. we had canals, fences, cows little bridges and lots of gravel and JC would swoop it all. Craziest swoop i saw had me marking out points in spray paint on gravel farm roads for a canopy that had never been jumped before. He was insane but at the same time is one of the nicest guys i have met in the sport. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .

pirana 0 #72 February 5, 2008 QuoteQuoteQuoteHaving seen Lugi jump and land the 39 on several occasions, it is indeed impressive but I doubt the 2 sq ft reduction in canopy size is going to be much of a challenge for him. I have to agree in concept, but with the caviat that there is some point where these just become unlandable. Although it's only 2 square feet, it's still over 5% of the total size. I don't imagine he'll have a problem with it, but if we continue down this path of reasoning, "just a sq foot at a time", eventually we're at a 10 sq foot canopy. It's gotta give at some point. Thoughts? Ultimately the vertical decent rate will just be so much greater than the horizontal rate that it will make it unlandable...2 things allow a canopy to be landed safely: slow vertical decent, or fast horizontal decent. Once you start dropping out of the sky like a brick you will end up with a nasty outcome. Technology and talent are a cool combination, but physics will kick its ass everytime. Keep in mind I am plowed right now so I am not even sure if what i said makes sense. You did just fine, outside the use of "its." When I'm plowed I don't even try, I just fall over." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
