Jumping with Hook Knives

Recommended Posts

Do you? I haven't seen a direct poll on it, and I wanted to pull everything together where it'll get the most exposure/feedback.

Has anyone ever used their hook knife? (personal stories only, please)

Also, if you do wear one, even only occasionally, where do you have it? Where on your jumpsuit? Where on your rig?

Do you where more than one?

I carry one hook knife in a pocket on my chest strap. There's another one in a pocket on my wingsuit.

I've never used one. I made a point of carrying one on every jump after an incident at Perris a few years ago.

I don't expect to ever need to use one but I see no reason not to carry one.

I have one of those small ones that came with my rig and tucked under the logo below the 3 ring assembly. I always have it on. I will also add the bigger hook knife for CRW on my chest strap.

Required in the UK after A licence, but I would anyway - why not?

One on my jumpsuit leg (jackknife) and one on my legstrap (small hook knife)

Only reason for two is in case I fumble.

Lost one once though as it got ripped off my leg on a tight exit.>:(

Wear one on my chest strap.

Never used to wear one, till I started jumping with a camera, then it's required in SA. So I had to get one.

Now that I've got one will obviously always wear it. I'm glad I have one, you never know. Even jumping without camera I still wear it. If I loose it, I'll get another one.

I wear one because it is required once you get your A-licence. If it wasn't, I might not have thought about wearing one - it would all depend on what other people were saying.

On hired kit I wear it on the chest strap, because it is the easiest place to put it onto quickly. No I have my own kit, it is on the leg strap because it is less likely to go missing.

One of the original options was "Only when ... swooping". How would you have time to use a hook knife while you were in a swoop?

I wear one, small one on my leg strap.

In the UK, as others have said, its mandatory to wear one once you're licensed. The problem is, theres no intstruction for what its for, situations etc, you just have to wear one.

I think there should be something in the A qualification that teaches you what its for and when to use it.

I jump with four. Two Jacks in front under my mud flaps. Two 6" metal hook knives on the back of each leg strap. A hook knife and backup on each side.

Used them twice, each time alternate procedures would probably have worked.

i jump without one. and i also jump without visual altimeter. but with three audible altimeters :)
i do speed dives and i can't have anything loose or asymmetrical. i used to have a very light spin
while i was doing speed divers some time ago. i discovered that altimeter on my left hand was
causing it. since i can't really look at it anyway during freefall i opted to jump without one. the
same reason i jump without a hook knife. maybe it wouldn't be a big deal, but who knows it
could be a 1 mph that would make all the difference on competition :)

I jump with one. It came with my rig(Aerodyne icon). I think I've used it ten times this week alone(it doubles as a bottle opener:P) I would have bought one even if my rig hadn't come with one, you never know when you're gonna need it, and why not?

woa....that was cool....

Using your hook-knife for tasks like cutting rubber bands, opening beer bottles, and cutting pull-up cords is an EXCELLENT way to guarantee that it will be completely useless if you ever need it.

A hook-knife is an emergency life saving tool. Treat it as such and you'll thank yourself.
