best place for canopy school in Florida.

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I will be moving to Florida in 2 weeks and want to do more training. since I am not safe untill I get to the gound and can walk away I would like to learn how to be a better canopy pilot. I dont care about swooping at this point, I just want to have a tip toe landing 98% of the time and be safe for others in the air and while landing. so far I am landing within 5 feet of the target on every jump (last 5 jumps) but not always standing up. So where is the best school to go to in Florida and how much is it for what I want to do. I will be living in the orlando area but have no problem traveling a couple of hours.

Thanks,
Mike

Agreed. Deland has some of the best pilots and canopy coaches in the world available for anyone who needs them.

Term-v: You'll have access to Scott Miller, Ian Bobo and Jimmy-T to name but a few coaches.

Edit: Deland is great for coaching, but not so much for fun jumping. Just an FYI as it can be a little "cold" for visiting fun jumpers.

Good luck.

I don't know about this statement! I found Paxton and Jimmy to be very friendly and helpful. I was envited on a sunrise jump and a swooop at some guys house on the lake. Those guys rock. The first night they offered beer and small talk. When Jimmy found out my Neptune was acting up he gave me his, while waiting for mine to get fixed. When we bought our t-shirts they gave us a discount for buying in bulk, and the staff was very friendly to us being out of town-ers, they showed us the in and the outs of the DZ. The staff at the Perfect spot, were very hard working and very helpful, I would recommend DeLand to all my friends for the greatest skydiving experience in Florida. Skyvan, Proter, Otter. I made some solo loads between coaching, I made friends with three people who envited me to jump with them on the plane ride up, they were great, one was a girl, the other was a man who was married and his wife was watching from the ground, the third was a man from Switzerland doing some birdman jumps. I had a great time in Deland. Also Mahaw and Jenny were very nice and helpful, They showed us around town, and we let our dogs run and play. I made many friends in the 4 days I was there, I am looking forward to returning. :)

Right!
Scott Miller's canopy control class is great! And Scott is a really mellow guy who knows his shit!

I'm sorry that you or somebody you know has had a bad or "cold" experience. [:/] I am brand new to skydiving and everyone at DeLand has been very friendly! :)

You can't go wrong with Scott Miller's course. I've taken it twice at different times in my skydiving progression and have learned a lot both times. There are quite a few threads about his classes in the forums if you want to do a search for them. The overwhelming majority of the people say they learned a lot from him.

As for Deland, don't let that party-pooper Ian scare you. There are plenty of nice and friendly people there! I wouldn't call it my home dz if there weren't!

Oh, you sweet talker, you. Funny how all the times I saw you also happened to coincide with a swoop meet! ;)

Paxton Vinyard is a good friend of mine and a top notch individual, knew him when he couldn't fly.. hahahahaha

Now's he's one of the best and always willing to pass on his knowledge. He's one of the safest jumpers I've ever met. You'd be hard prest to keep up with him partying too... hahahah Great Skydiver, Great guy. DeLand can't help but be a cool place as long as he's running around down there. Last time I was there he introduced me to a lot of his friends. They are as cool as he is. DeLand has a lot to offer... if you are ever in the area you ought to at least check it out for yourself. And when you're down there... Tell Paxton that Fletch said "Wasssup!".

Heck, I have just quietly WATCHED some of his classes, and what he was doing with his "students" and picked up myself each time, a little something extra it seems I could USE. At almost any level, definitely fully worthwhile.

And ignore that "fossil" in the orange jumpsuit lurking around behind you during your ground instruction/debriefs :P

Shit, sooner or later Scott's gonna catch up to me and hit me up BIG TIME. ...It's probably equitably due too! ;)

Only partially kidding. It's been about 2 years since I've seen Scott. Doesn't seem to travel as much. "Big enough" now that people come to him! Feel lucky you are in proximity to take advantage of that.
