bozo 0 #26 December 16, 2007 Quote I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that the majority (Jen, Krisanne, Pat) that have been invited to stay in various homes are of the female persuasion. if you're a male, expect fewer offers from skydivers. Noooooo....thats just you DSE. bozo Pain is fleeting. Glory lasts forever. Chicks dig scars.
peregrinerose 0 #27 December 16, 2007 DSE, any time you need a place to crash in PA, you're welcome at our place... feel better now? The offers have pretty much always been when Chad and I were traveling together, not just me alone, so has nothing to do with my gender. Offers have been from women as often as men. The people that stayed with us have been of both genders.... I don't really think it matters much. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
bozo 0 #28 December 16, 2007 Rereading this thread brought back an old memory. We were having a boogie at Skydive Mesquite...one of the very first there. I had made friends with a guy at Elsinore that was broke and wanted to come to the boogie. I offered him a place to stay at my home to help offset his costs somewhat. He took me up on it and showed up at the house very late on Friday nite....with his hosebag girlfriend and her three under 5 year old snotnosed kids. One of the kids was really sick with a cold and had no business being out anywhere, Needless to say it wasnt very enjoyable. Still and all I have offered my extra bedrooms out to jumpers many times since. bozo Pain is fleeting. Glory lasts forever. Chicks dig scars.
VTmotoMike08 0 #29 December 16, 2007 To the OP: BMW Motorcycle Owners of America has such a network for its members. I can't, for the life of me, remember exactly what it is called but it is published in an annual pocket size book. But basically, if you volunteer, you list your general area and phone number (not name) and if a fellow BMW MOA member breaks down in your area, you have agreed to help him/ her out with a tow, ride, etc. From what I have seen, it only gets used by the really hard core BMW fanatics. This could possibly relate to skydiving... or not. I'm not sure.
sundry 0 #30 December 16, 2007 I can easily see how that would come in handy in my skydiving, but then again my spots are extraordinarily lousy
Krip 2 #31 December 16, 2007 Quote Quote I like your idea, but as others have posted I think it is a bit much to invite someone to sleep at your house without meeting them. I do believe though, that we should have DZ/area specific threads that might list: local bars, hotels, things to do, etc. so when traveling to an area, you have a rough plan of whats going down. Someone coming to your area might post, and you could let them know about special events and things to do If you only have 14 jumps, you haven't had much exposure to jumpers yet, but inviting strangers to stay at our homes is much more the rule than the exception. Every time I've posted on here that I was going somewhere, I've had offers of places to stay, generally from people I've never met. Every year for the local rigging course, we let someone crash at our house for free since we're right up the street from the loft... so far, 2 people that I've never talked to before they walked through the door stayed with us for more than a week. Several others have stayed here for other reasons and shorter times too. Hell, I even drove more than 2 hours each way to pick up a sewing machine for a rigger, just because he needed someone local to the ebay auction to pick it up and I was one of the closest he found on here. I never met him before he came to pick up the machine from my house several weeks later. We're a fairly open and generally giving bunch. You'll see that in time When I was a sweet young sky babe I had a great time getting invited on loads past my ability, safety mtgs after jumping was over and getting invited to crash at lots of guy's pads, those were the daysThen I had the "operation" I went from a skybabe to a dude and the skydive social scene changed overnight. Every year I get older I notice The skydive social scene contines to change. Of course YMMV depending on the DZ vibes and the DZO but one thing will never change Gender helps when the odds on a DZ are 10 to 1 in your favor. If anyone doesn't belive gender and age doesn't count change your DZ.com names to gender neutral and use gender neutral avatars.Old tee shirt "Just because I slept with you last night doesn't mean I have to jump with you today". Never met a guy that it applied to. Off we go into the wild blue wonder
