What can we do about Skyride?

One thing though. If you do learn at ASC your landing skills will be awesome. :D

Like mine?? ;) I did my AFF at ASC. I lived in Nashville and was told by ASC that they were the closest. Little did I know I was driving right by Tennessee Skydiving Center on my 4 hour road trip. Hell I didnt know any better, I just wanted to have fun so I didn't question. duhhh..

That's kind of like with the old main landing area at my DZ. 50% of landings were crosswind AND we managed to land in opposite directions all the time. Made for some great training. There were a bunch of times where I was setting up my approach legs and just go, "oh fuck THAT" and landed elsewhere.

anyone have an idea of what the effects to skyride would be if sda wins its law suit, would they be put out of bussiness permanently or is their a way for them to cover their ass well enough that it really wont have any lasting effects

Depends on what damages are awarded, if SDA wins... if that happens, there'll probably be rounds and rounds of appeals. Skyride's probably got a bottomless pit of cash to pay their lawyers with by now... :|

Irony; Get caught steeling a candy bar at Walmart, or driving at .01 blood alcohol and you'll get to know a judge very well, and maybe have a 300 lb room mate named Bubba who thinks your sexy! Steel hundreds of thousands of dollars from people all over the United States through deception and no Attorney General, District Attorney, etc will touch it with a ten foot pole! Bunch of lazy fucks if you ask me, not an easy-slam dunk prosecution I guess.

Maybe we need to mobilize the Mothers of this country against Skyride and the sort?
"MAMORIES" (Mothers Against Marketing Of Really Illegal & Erroneous Scams)
Not the best, but it seems that the first order of business in a movement of this sort is to figure out a really cool acronym. Maybe someone else can do better?

This might stir you people all up, but I can’t take it any longer. I had to post my two cents. If someone was searching for a place to skydive and they went looking on the internet and came across a “Skyride” site, and decided to stop searching right there- is that the fault of Skyride? If they tell you they are the best, the only one, blah blah, doesn’t every company try to promote themselves as the ‘one and only place to go’? If there are other DZ’s to be found, it is the responsibility of that person to search it out, use the phone book etc. Take for example if you were looking to buy new tires for your car, are you going to only look up one place or check and see if there are others around? If you call a store are they going to tell you, yea go to ABC down the road, and there is XYZ about 10 min and I think there is even 123 right around the corner from you. I think not!

Next point, so say you didn’t look further, called Skyride. They say this and that, you say OK I want to reserve, where do I go to do this? If they say we can’t tell you, then YOU say sorry, you can’t have my credit card. Wouldn’t you find out first where you are going BEFORE you put your money down? Even if they did tell you where it was, look it up before making your decision!! Anyone could have done MapQuest and saw for themselves where they were going and decided it was too far or not. How about asking if they have a cancellation policy? Have you ever booked a vacation with a travel agent? They don’t give refunds at all and you book that stuff months ahead of time. What do they do- force you to buy travel insurance if you want to change your mind. Do you all think that is a scam too?

So with all this said, how many people out there simply were not smart enough to ask more questions before they gave up their credit card number? I can only speak out on what I read, nothing personally has happened to me to be upset with Skyride. If it was that bad a place, I can’t imagine people would gladly go jump there or even work there.

Ok folks, you can reem me a new one now.

Hey, MySkyName.

First off, you might want to fill out your new profile. Are you a skydiver?

"Do you work for Skyride?" is another question that seems valid, as Skyride in the past has sent people to 'bait' and 'egg on' people on these forums (I assume in order to show in legal proceedings that they had made some sort of 'outreach' to the skydiving community, but I really don't know all the specifics)...regardless, it's a little suspicious that you speak as if you've been reading this topic for quite a while ("I can't take it any longer"), and yet this is your first post, having only registered today.

I'll gladly have a discussion with you about the ins-and-outs of the legality of the Skyride operation, but not before I know you're not canvasing the board for something to use in court. Don't want to sound paranoid, but like I said, there's a precedent here...and I don't really want to discuss it with you too much if my words might be used to help Skyride (whose business practices indicate they'd have no problem quoting someone out-of-context for their own personal gain).

Fill out the profile, let the board know what your background is (i.e., do you happen to work for ASC or Skyride?), and I'll be glad to discuss it (no 'reeming' going on here, just a good discussion).

Blame the victim much??

It is the Lies and Deception that upsets everyone. If I go to a web site called Skydive Anytown that is specifically designed to make me believe that there is a real dropzone called Skydive Anytown, It would be a reasonable assumption that that dropzone would be located somewhere reasonably near "Anytown".

When you call and they pretend to be this fictitious Dropzone until they get your credit card, it is called fraud in my opinion.

As for what they did in regard to Chris Martins Phone Number (Calling AT&T after his death pretending to be him and having his 1-800 number rerouted to Skyride), That was criminal in my opinion.

If you read the deposition attached to my previous post, the Scam they allegedly used to get Skyride in all the nationwide Phone Books was also criminal.

Thousands of people are ripped off in many different ways every day. Yes, Most of them should have been smarter and asked more questions. But that doesn’t make the people ripping them off any less guilty. Nor does it justify their behavior.

Why do people jump there?? Its a good DZ with a good staff and some great jumpers. No one is attacking the Jumpers and Staff at ASC. Just the Owners and their sleazy business practices.

I agree with you Lisa! Fuck the dumb! If someone is not smart enough to keep from being deceived by a practiced con man then it should be absolutely ok to lie, cheat and steel from them.

I run a DZ and whenever someone shows up and appears to be less than the most intellectual person in the world we go on overdrive and see just how much money we can con them out of! If they're dumb and attractive we not only try to work more money out of them, but do our damnedest to work them out of their clothing. You should see us work! Good damn thing that they have to be 18, and we've worked a few additional disclosures into our "special" waivers, the attractive women actually sign a sexual consent form! You just got'a love this country!

Again Lisa, I'm all with you! Fuck the dumb, figuratively and literally!

Edit to add:
Disclosure: just in case anyone here is one of the above mentioned “dumb” and can’t recognize sarcasm when they see it. The above opinion is a good example of sarcasm.

And in case you’re not smart enough to know what sarcasm is…

Sarcasm: remarks that mean the opposite of what they seem to say and are intended to mock or deride.
Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else.

I assure you, just a girl that likes to read the boards and enjoys skydiving. NO relation to Skyride nor do I know anyone that works there or anything about it. I have looked at the websites as people mentioned and could not understand what was all the fuss. But since I have had no dealings with them I dont know. I was only curious why people would hand over their money when they did not even know where they were going. When I originally wanted to find a place to go I read a lot online first and saw articles about this Skyride thing, but still kept searching anyway for a DZ near me. I have only done tandems, so do not have a license etc. And anyway, if I said anything here online I dont think that holds up in a courtroom. This is like a blog, you cant believe everything that is here! This is peoples opinions. It is not legal documentation. The internet can be fantasy land, at least, that is what I think.

Im not calling anyone stupid. I only think people need to be very careful when they give their credit number to anyone over the phone. Be sure you know what you are buying. Ask questions! There are TONS of scams on the internet, so just be careful is all I mean! I asked 100 questions before I did my tandem dive the first time. I did not want to hand over that kind of money to some stranger. Im sorry people get so upset over this. I was not ripped off so Im not one of the angry people.

There must be someone that thought the same as me. I am sure there are people that believe all the scams, like that email about Bill Gates giving away free money. Or Budweiser will send you a case of beer. I do have a question about what that guy said about the phone number thing. Is that legally possible? I know once I had a roommate and the phone was in her name. She moved and I forgot about it and I wanted to change it to my name since I was still living there. When I called the phone company they would not do it, they wanted a social security number or other code word. So how did the owners of Skyride get the phone company to switch things? They really stole his identity somehow? If so, wouldnt they have been put in jail?? Wouldnt the phone company have rights to sue them too? I dont know how much of the stuff on this posting is right, or people talking. And here I am adding to the mess. Maybe I will shut up. But I could not understand how this could go on and on if all this stuff keeps happening?? How can they be in business all this time and still make money if all this is true?

They systematically steal copyrighted material and misrepresent themselves as other businesses (see Skydive Az's lawsuit). Is that not enough?
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

You must not be the bright bulb in a lamp, as far as we can see.

You have all this insight about skyride B|, and you have x amount of jumps?

Well, good for you. We are very proud of young skydivers that have such insight about our sport.

Just read all that has been written about skyride.

It is a whole lot different then reading the "Dick and Jane books.

I can tell you I called the phone number to offer my condolences and ASC answered.

I have logged the date and time as it was from a DOD phone. Just waiting for the FBI or TBI to come get it.

I called to book a DZ for our Team to train at, they where very supportive telling me about the turbine aircraft and great facilites (having been to the DZ, I thought this was, I was suprised how fast it recovered from the death of its owner. I was suprised that the new ownership had not mentioned a full time turbine as apposed to an Aircraft schedule that traded from a Cessna to a king air.)

Boy did they change there tune when they found out it was a Military Team and we would pay our contract buy military credit card. I was told I must have miss dialed. When I hit redial do you want to have 3 guess who answered the phone? First two dont count.

Skyride know how illegal they are and that is why they have started 2 other companies, so when one goes the business wont stop. But the FBI and TBI now know that too.

I just hope the courts will order the fake DZ web pages deleted and that the whole scam is fined to a point it has to be honest to survive.

But alas we have judges and Business owners who think some crime is ok, it wasn't too bad.[:/]

I think its good that students look into the skyride scam. I know when i was learning to jump this kind of shit never occured to me. A dollar says her IP address is somewhere near Cedartown:D

Don't feed the trolls.

I have felt awful on more than one occasion when skyride failed to inform some one of the weight limit, and I have seen them turned down. That really sucks. [:/]

You guys can all make fun and your rude and nasty comments all you want. I am trying to find out facts without having to read through every single one of these posts, but SO much of it is angry people spouting off. For once I would like someone to link me to a fact about this, not be obnoxious and make fun of me. You have no idea who I am. If this is what it is like to be a licensed skydiver, maybe it truly is not for me. I said I did tandems and enjoyed it, but yes, it does scare me to jump out alone. I dont know if I can do that. So if that is wrong that I enjoyed the thrill but dont want to make this my #1 hobby, well then I guess that makes me a terrible person. I wanted to learn more information so maybe I would consider jumping solo, but since you all came down on me so hard and nasty Im not so sure I want this at all. Someone even mentioned sexual things, sarcasm or not, that really alarmed me. Is a female safe at the DZ's or is this what guys are thinking? It is obvious that usually more men are into this, so what does this say about how you respect women in your sport? You should think about what you write, many other people see this. Why is everyone against me? I guess I will not post here anymore, will go to the womens section or somewhere where people will be honest and give advice and not rake me over the coals. Cant we all just get along?
