cypres or Vigil which one should I get?

Recommended Posts

got tired of waiting for the vigil2. the more I waited the more I came to my senses and went with the cypress2. Glad they couldn't deliver my original order from months ago.

Had no problems when I ordered a Vigil. 20 years plus vs 12. Time and cost for maintenance vs none. 3 modes vs 1 therefore more functional. No contest really.

The fact that the PIA ganged up and wouldn't allow vigil to exhibit at the last symposium - pathetic old boys club!!

i personally use neither. as i feel that many people rely on them too much. of course the big one is the cost and my own lack of funds to purchase one of course.

today of course if i had my selection id go for the virgil. while it does and had its share of problems I know in time that these issues will be fixed.

i like the sealed battery, ability to change/ update information, life cycle, and free cutter replacement if used....

all these might not mean anything to some... but anything man made can and will fail... reminds me of bill cosby's talk about god/ man, car, and a rabbit......

You need to get your facts straight. Advanced Aerospace Designs (makers of Vigil) had a double booth at the 2007 PIA Symposium. Two adjacent booths numbers 131 and 230.

I just switched from a Cypress 1 to a Vigil. I had just sold my rig and was getting new when I was offered a new Vigil for $1050.00, so needless to say I JUMPED on it! :P I like both units and with the Vigil I only have to replace the batteries every four years, and there is no maintenance costs involved. The Vigil will last me a long time (till 2027). I think it is a better deal for the money.

Vigil

I had the honor of throwing away a perfectly good Cypress because its ARBITRARY expiration date came. (ok, I didn't really throw it away, I got $50 for it)

I replaced it with a Vigil. I have a 2nd Cypress which will also soon 'expire'. I'll be buying another Vigil to replace it.

If I was a rigger and packing my own reserve, I'd still be using my 'old' Cypress.

Feel free to flame away here... but I would like to just interject my opinions about the maintenance issue and why I don't necessarily see it as a "PRO" for the vigil.... (I'm sure these are arguments you have all read before, but please humor me for the sake of those new to this discussion)

While down time does suck for those of us who jump year round, I can't help but question "No maintenance required" as a good thing.

You personally give your gear a once over on a regular basis...
You have a rigger inspect your reserve...
Why not have a qualified individual inspect a critical life saving component of your rig???

Would you drive your car for 12 or 20 years without it ever seeing the mechanic?

Think of every piece of electronics you have ever bought in your lifetime. Now, how many of those have lasted 12-20 years? And if you are arguing that your Cypress/Vigil is not subjected to the same abuses...think of me next time your pounding on your BOC, dropping your rig to the ground, throwing it in the car, hitting the pond, falling on landing, having a colision in free fall, going from cold winter air to the warm hanger, leaving your rig in a hot car...

edited to add: I am not pulling all of this out of my ass. Just to qualify my thoughts here, I am an electronics engineer who works in equipment maintenance for broadcast equipment. I think both are fine products. Read the opinions here, make a informed decision and be happy! Go Jump!

Vigils have maintenance...atleast the one we had that fired while sitting on the gear rack is going back for maintenance. It had some problems booting, no error message, after a couple of tries it finally booted. The rig was grounded until the company could be contacted during the week. About an hour later POP and the reserve fired while sitting on the rack. Now I've only been in the sport for 7 years, but I've never seen a Cypres do that.

I agree; I think the big issue is "do you want to wait until that happens before buying one?" I think they've got most of the bugs out of it, but personally would prefer to wait a bit longer. But they're still good devices.

750 feet AGL at 120 mph is one hell of a time to be waiting for "the rest of the bugs to get worked out"

No AAD on the market has all the bugs worked out. The issue is just working out enough of them that the remaining ones have a very, very small chance of manifesting themselves. Personally I prefer AAD's that fail passively i.e. err on the side of not firing when they're supposed to rather than the side of firing when they're not supposed to.

time for a new AAD. what are the pros and cons.

Cypress2 without a doubt.

No maintenance checks on the vigil is a con for me.

Vigil is still too new and has too many bugs for me to be comfortable with it.

I like the way the cypress behaves. The vigil is almost too fire happy for me.

It is a statistically low chance that I will actually need my cypress and it is an even more statisticly low chance that it doesn't fire when it is supposed to. There is some possibility that the cypress will misfire, but that chance seems to be higher on the vigil, given that it seems they would rather have them fire than not fire. Well, in 2015 you'll know if the > 12 year lifespan bit is true. It's brilliant marketing - few people will still keep the unit that long, but they can sell on the promise. Meanwhile Argus didn't follow.

But $1050 versus $1325 - $300 is a big difference. The weakness of the Euro is hurting Cypres on the selling price. Mine isn't depreciating as fast as it should be!

How about the Argus [http://www.argus-aad.com/homepage.asp].
When you swoop ,the swoop mode works fine! I have it on Swoop mode all the time.
Ive been jumping it for a few years and when ever there is an update they have great service and a product that stays in contact with what skydivers want and need.
IF you are looking for an AAD check this one out 2
