canopy mals

I'm trying to figure out which canopies had the most mals, not skydiver induced...are there any that are most prone?

your poll makes no sense at all.
the canopy's that had the most mals were the ones that were cut-away.

Me thinks he means which canopies didn't pack themselves correctly so the mals were the canopies fault.:)

I was jumping this tiny little main for awhile, but it had a 100% malfunction rate. I went through 7 or 8 DIFFERENT ones before I finally got wise and stopped jumping them. 5 of them blew up completely, a lineover, and a couple of streamers--I will NEVER jump one of those again! Fortunately, they were relatively inexpensive (go figure!) so I didn't go through too much $$$ when I'd just buy a new one. I don't recommend ANYONE trying to jump one of these, and if it DOES open correctly for you, PLEASE DON"T LAND IT!

I believe they were manufactured by Hefty.

The old Pegasus canopies made in the early 80's had one of the worst malfunction rates. It was so bad they stopped making them and I think an advisory was put out for jumpers to stop jumping them. My friend had one and he had 7 malfunctions on it in 20 jumps.

I don't think there are any canopy made these days that have more of a tendency to malfunction than others.

The poll didn't make any sense to me either...

ouch :S

sorry this didn't make sense to you guys...I listed this as a poll cuz it was a question I was hoping many of you would answer with your opinions on which are the safest canopies, and which aren't.

Maybe I should have phrased it differently...but can't think of a more straightforward way of asking...are there canopies that are more prone to mals than others? Which are more prone to line twists, bag locks, line overs, etc

I'll do some research and get back...once again, sorry guys.

IMO those malfunctions are from packing errors.

I will take a chance and say that Tandem mains have the highest percentage of having a mal. Just canopy mals, were not going into the malfunction tree of tandem jumping here.
The reason has nothing to do with the manufacturer or design, more of a fact of there is a lot of line and a lot of material so the chance of something happening there is increased. Tension knots and lineovers, not so much line twists.
That said, tandem Mal's are a lot milder and if you have something like a line twist or a lineover you have a greater chance of clearing it than with a tiny canopy. But line twists are a lot easier to have with a smaller canopy. So tandems have the tension knot and linover happening advantage, and the tiny elliptical has the line twist happening advantage. Even though all are possible on all canopies there is a bigger chance with the different canopies. So tandem mal 2-1 over small main mal. But clearing a small main mal definite disadvantage, anyone that has had a nasty spinner under a sub 100 canopy will testify that they wished they had had a huge main above them at that time instead.

So the answer to your question is, the chance of having a cutaway is probably even, with whatever canopy you jump. Pack neat as possible, take care of your line stows and make sure you put it in the container cleanly and hope for the best.

But I can say I have done the worst pack jobs of my life with a spectre 170 (first pack jobs) and it always opened wonderfully.
