SABRE Vs. SABRE 2

Recommended Posts

ok... so anyway i have an original sabre that i am wing loading at about 1.03 and i want to downsize to a loading of 1.13 give or take.... and i want a little more responsiveness and less front riser pressure than my sabre but i dont want it to take 1200 feet to open like a safire 2 so i was thinking of getting a sabre 2 but i dont know anyone who flies one.... any comments? especially on the time it takes to be under a fully functionable canopy....

You're not really giving enough information and nor do people on the internet know you well enough to give good canopy advice. Talk to the experienced jumpers at your DZ and demo a few canopies. I'll bet that PD has truckloads of Sabre2's available.

My advice would be to demo the Safire2, Sabre2 and Pilot at the same wingloading and see what you prefer. All three open and fly very well at that loading. There are several summer boogies coming up that will have demos available.

Once you have determined that, try one size smaller on that canopy (assuming you are 100% comfortable under the 1.03 loading, can flat/flare turn, can stand up every one of your landings, can land crosswind, etc etc.)

It's nearly impossible to say what canopy is "good" because everyone has different likes, dislikes and needs. For example, many people like the Pilot at lighter loadings, but the Safire2 is more fun (and opens a lot better) at heavier loadings. But I know other people who prefer the Pilot in the smaller sizes. It all depends on your particular likes and dislikes.

I don't know what anyone else here thinks but the Sabre2 I tried has a lot higher front riser pressure than my current Sabre (both 150's). No question that the Sabre2 was more responsive in all inputs though. The Sabre2 also definitely opens quicker than the Safire2. I'd be amazed at a Safire2 actually taking 1200 feet to open though - leave the nose hanging out the front (obviously there's absolutely no need to even think about rolling the nose) and don't cover it with the slider.

I actually do like having a fast opening canopy, but the Safire2 is just so much fun to fly that I would still get one if I could afford it.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

PD is great about sending demos right away and they will take care of you. i think kim is in charge of demos and i would recommend it highly. i demo'd several canopies and glad i did. i liked the sabre2 but went with a spectre as i am a vidiot.

I second the recomedation to demo the Pilot, Safire2 and Sabre2 before buying. All are similar...I preferred the Pilot and all companies have a good demo program. The Safire demo cost more, but it is worth it to know before you buy. At least, demo the Pilot and Sabre2 first.
