Helicopter Jumps

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to do my first one next weekend. So want to know, how is the exit different from the otter or skyvan? How do you exit? Do you just jump out or have to stand on the landing feet thing, then jump? Do helicopters go to 13,000 ft. or lower altitude? I guess the prop blast would be from above rather than the side, what's that like? I'm sure there will be a briefing before we go up but just wanted to get the scoop ahead of time. :)

Firstly, refrain from jumping up.:P

Helocopters that are used commonly for skydiving (non-military) tend to go to around 4k AGL. Its a fun ride and just all around neat. The pilot will tell you what he/she wants for exits (1 at a time, 2 at a time 1 on opposite sides, etc). Also covered will be if its ok to climb on the struts and where you can step/go.

Remember somethingn important, approach the aircraft from the front not the rear like a regular airplane (I'm sure you knew that, just wanted to mention it again).

Whats it like?

Its pretty cool. I enjoy doing balloon jumps more then Helo jumps, but that's just me.

Yeah, that's my next goal, to do a balloon jump. Just wanted to do a helo jump cuz it'll be there and I haven't done one before, but sounds like it's just a H&P from a different aircraft. A friend told me about doing a bungi jump from a balloon, that sounded awesome!

Helo jumps are goooood. You will finally get that "falling" feeling you never seem to get from the Otter. Our pilot was very adamant about us just "leaning out" instead of jumping out, I guess somebody earlier had leaped and it fucked his shit up somehow.
Whats it like... falling in no air at all for about 5 seconds then its just like normal FF except you'll need to be tracking/pulling about the time it starts to feellike normal freefall (terminal).
You will enjoy it my friend. See if they will let you hang from the strut, its a nicer exit.

The landing thingie is called the "skid" and the strut is what connects it to the helicopter. Hope they let you jump from a full hover. That's how you'll get the best "weightless time" on exit. For my first one, I had one friend on the left skid, I sat on the right skid and did a backflip off. It was so cool, just whipping out backflips with no wind. Then she and I flew in for a kiss pass. Perfect jump. Enjoy.:)

Helo Jumps are too cool. I made my first helo jump at Rantoul. The feeling i got was soooo freaking awesome!!! A little bit of the falling sensation. I would just say to hold your arch and keep aware of your altitude. Here's the helo I jumped up there.

i did a helo jump last march.....it was the best expieriance in my life...it was soo much fun...the pilot took us up to 8 grand and we stood on the strut...AKA foot thingy...:) we stood on it and just leaned forward and fell off.....you really get that stomach in your mouth feeling....its awsome....i thought that i would get all unstable do to the fact that there is no relative wind...but i was stable throughout the jump and through terminal.......i would recommend it to everyone to at least try it once in there skydiving expieriance....

they are a blast. get video!

but things to remember:
they usually only go up to 5k or so.
since they don't have a 80+ mph forward speed on jumprun, you can't give a 5 second count and go. You have to look out and wait until the jumper below you is no longer beneath you, or give them a LOT of time.
also, i really never noticed the prop blast. it felt like a normal "deadair" jump.

Ev,

We will be going to 5,000' AGL in a Eurocopter A-Star.
All jumpers will be required to attend a briefing. I've jumped it before and it is much nicer/roomier/faster climbing, than the JetRanger, which is a lot of fun, too. B|

The Alouette 2 from Cross Keys made the circuitall the way to south Texas last year. The pilot is incredible. He'll show you how to exit. Step out on the skid, face the pilot and take the "Nestea plunge".

Chopper jumps are just badassB|B|

Yup, that very helo is the one I got my helicopter jump out of here at my home DZ, Skydive Aggieland.

He was one cool hombre and a lot of fun to have on the DZ...

That brings up a new point. If you jump that helicopter, wear earplugs, that thing is LOUD.

Notice that dropzone.com is an international site, please.

I live in Finland so its not so far from me.
Yeah, jumps in Russia is really cheap, but there are other issues than jump prices...

Notice she's in SoCal and is planning to be at a boogie 20 minutes from her home DZ.

Evelyn was the jumper in question and I was merely pointing out what it would cost her. It was a joke, and tough shit if you can't take it.:P

How long does it take to go to terminal?

That's somethign you should probably have learned in AFF. It's about 9 to 10 seconds usually.

Now quiz time. From a still air exit at 5000ft AGL how long till you hit the ground if you do nothing? How about till you're at your intended deployment altitude?

LOUD? What's LOUD?? Oh wait... I'm DEAF... :D

I jumped that helo when it flew at Moss Point for the Mardi Gras boogie last year. John Eddowes is the pilot, tall dude with a beard. He's also the DZO of Skydive Cross Keys and an all-around great guy.

FWIW, the Bell 412's tree-top skimming rides at Quincy were longer and funner. John can do it just as good, but he doesn't waste much time near the ground. One good circle around the DZ at 10 to 15 feet off the ground and you're on the way up...

~10 seconds for the first 1000ft and ~5.5 seconds for each subsequent 1000ft... so ~30 seconds until the planet runs you over, give or take a couple seconds. :S

So a "B" level of experience jumper should be waving off about 15 seconds after departing the helo.

Sound good?

In his defence his rides are a bit cheaper. I've had a couple rides on that bird for $17 a slot.:)

You're right, he gives a much better bargain than the 412... :)
