How long to terminal?

Now quiz time. From a still air exit at 5000ft AGL how long till you hit the ground if you do nothing? How about till you're at your intended deployment altitude?

~10 seconds for the first 1000ft and ~5.5 seconds for each subsequent 1000ft... so ~30 seconds until the planet runs you over, give or take a couple seconds. :S

So these are the standard values for a typical jump - at 12.5+. At 15k the air is nearly half as dense as on the ground and acceleration and terminal speeds are higher.

But is the difference big enough to make more of a difference than the body weight and dress of the jumper?

Does the lack of foward throw and the thicker air change time to terminal - perhaps shorten it by one or two seconds?

Not likely. Do you want to bet your life on it?

I'm not sure how my life got put on the line. Terminal is reached well more than 3000ft off the ground.

It's a simple question - what's the difference in time to terminal between otter exit at 14000 going 90 versus Heli hovering at 5000?

For a given jumper the answer won't be the same. It may not be very different.

When your jumping a small helo the important thing is to not push off.Get in position and drop off.Very similar to a balloon jump except you get to pick your spot. :)

If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.

Well, I did it and it was awesome. Jumped with a friend, we stood on the strut, counted to 3, then just fell forward. We'd planned to dock, but I did a couple front flips and she didn't so I ended up lower, so we just waved, tracked off and pulled. It was so cool!
