Biglee 0 #1 May 6, 2007 Ok here is a Q for you all that i would like to know. As a student or just got A licensed you go and jump and have a mal, you have to cutaway and you lose the mains on your rental rig from DZ. Do you have to pay for a new one? if you do can you pay over a couple of months or so? Thanks Lee
phoenixlpr 0 #2 May 6, 2007 Why don't you ask the DZO where you jump about your liabilities?
ltdiver 3 #3 May 6, 2007 Quote you have to cutaway and you lose the mains on your rental rig from DZ. Do you have to pay for a new one? Most everywhere I've jumped the answer is YES. You lost their property. You have to replace it. Why should they be out something you rented? Personal experience: I was fliming my first CReW jump (I was behind the 2-way of Instructor and CReW student). They had a double wrap and both had to cutaway. Over the 'bad' part of town. The student's canopy was lost. Local spirited it away and we couldn't track it down. Student had to buy a new CReW canopy because they had borrowed it from the gear store. He did, however, ask how old the canopy was and was able to replace it with a similar in age one...instead of a brand-spanking new one. However, that was worked out between the gear store and the student. Ask one of the members of "Perris Fury" about it sometime. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
darkwing 5 #4 May 6, 2007 Everywhere I have jumped enough to know the answer to the question if it was a student was "NO." The DZ assumed the risk of such losses. If a potential student came to me to ask about a DZ and I knew the DZ had the policy of making it the student's responsibility, I would send them to a different DZ. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
billvon 2,990 #5 May 6, 2007 In most cases, students do not have to replace the canopy. But after AFF, if you rent gear from them, then you are responsible for either tracking it down or replacing it.
Biglee 0 #6 May 6, 2007 Thanks guys for the information I have my AFF booked for end of june and i just thought What if, it's costing me enough as it is. I did not want to worried about having to cutaway main and thinking ahh thats more money i have to pay out, i would expect that when i have reached A status i would have to pay out. Are student (Bigger) canopy less likely to get a mal than the smaller canopy more advance people use?

That should never even be part of your thought process during a malfunction, you need to save your ass. I dont know about you but my life is worth much more than a canopy to me! tbrown 26 #8 May 7, 2007 Usually you'll have to sign some kind of a rental agreement that should clearly state what your responsibilities are if you lose or damage a rig or canopy. As an aside to this issue, has anyone ever lost a chopped canopy and had their howmeowner's insurance pay for the loss ? Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity ! mnskydiver688 0 #9 May 7, 2007 Yeah that should not be in your mind at all when it comes to mal's. Your life is worth more than any canopy.Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
Andy9o8 2 #10 May 7, 2007 QuoteAs an aside to this issue, has anyone ever lost a chopped canopy and had their howmeowner's insurance pay for the loss ? Only example I've heard of, second-hand, is someone who got his rig stolen out of the trunk of his car, and his homeowner's carrier did pay, under the "theft" provision. I think he had receipts to prove ownership and value. Everyone should check the language of their homeowner's/renter's policy carefully. If you can show that the canopy was likely stolen after being cut away, you might have a good argument for payment. If it was simply lost as an incident of ordinary usage (like cutting away over the forest, etc.), some policies may cover it, while others may not - the specific language of your policy would control. Many insurance policies have provisions requiring you to "schedule" (specifically list and describe) certain valuables like jewelry and other things with the company in advance. You often also have the option of scheduling certain valuable items with the carrier even if it's not required, just to cover yourself. (Like a valuable stereo, etc.) Might not be a bad idea to ask your insurance agent whether this is a good idea to do with one's rig, and its individual components. Also, keep receipts for all components of your rig, so that you can prove your ownership of your rig's components, as well as values.
