peckerhead 0 #1 April 10, 2007 I will turn 45 this summer, I have been skydiving since I was 18. I have an IAD rating and I have been a SL instructor since 1986. I am a camera flyer and I have video of 200 tandems. I have 3 rigs and 4 jumpsuits. I am a senior rigger. I have packed thousands of student rigs and over 200 reserves. I have 6 night jumps including a 4 stack, I have a D lisense. 300 crw jumps and 7 Mr. Bills. I will fuel airplanes, sweep the floor and clean the toilet. Just kidding, I would only fuel the airplane. slotperfect 7 #2 April 10, 2007 So . . . are you actually looking for a skydiving job?Arrive Safely John
slotperfect 7 #4 April 10, 2007 That really doesn't answer my question . . . if you are actually looking for a skydiving job, this is not the place for it - the classifieds is the appropriate place. If you are "testing the waters" or asking for some other general purpose, that's a different story. Again . . . are you actually seeking employment in the skydiving community.Arrive Safely John

peckerhead 0 #6 April 10, 2007 I was just throwing it out there to see what the current climate is. I think it is a valid question. Am I still relevent? or have I passed my prime? BTW The wonderhog thing was a joke.

BTW The wonderhog thing was a joke. Dunno if you "past" your prime, but you may have "passed" your prime. Sounds like you have a solid background, but as an employer, that is about 1/3 of what I need to know/see. Are you reliable? Trustworthy? Capable of having keys to my 'kingdom?' Are you happy? do you have a great attitude? Can you tell someone that they screwed up without them feeling stupid? Can you compliment without giving them false praise? Are you a people person? Talent is important, but easily the smallest aspect of what I'm looking for in an employee. Great; glad to hear you're a skygod. Just cuz you *can* pack, the bigger question is "will you?" I don't think age has too much to do with "prime." The mere fact you ask the question perhaps sets you up for some difficult realizations.

I would like to think I am reliable and trustworthy. I have been given the keys to the kingdom many times. I am happy and energetic. A very high maintenence and out of control person described by many... You would like me.... DSE 5 #16 April 10, 2007 If you read assumptions, you mis-read. They're questions that any intelligent employer is asking about you, whether he/she verbalizes it or not. I've got guys in their early 60's working for me, guys that are in their late teens working for me. Age matters so little overall. I care about the things I listed before. ~attitude ~reliability ~trustworthy ~people-ability ~skill Our DZ just hired (as manager) an early 40's guy that has an awesome attitude, great people skills, and bad knees. He brings a great vibe to the DZ with his smile, upbeat attitude, and intelligent response to challenging situations. He gets on his knees and packs, he organizes loads, he teaches, he listens, he takes out the trash, he spends personal time with the students and skygods alike. Very little of what I mention has to do with skydiving skill. That is the core of what he DOES, but not related much to who he IS. Consider my earlier questions as rhetoricals if that makes more sense. [edit to add] Did I mention I'm older than you?
JohnMitchell 16 #17 April 10, 2007 Quote I was just wondering if old skydivers can still get work Hell yes, I got 5 years on you and work weekends at the DZ. I could go full time, I'm sure, but I have a day job. Showing up sober, being safe and reliable, and dealing well with students are much more important than how many B-days you've had. I don't know how long I'll be physically able to do tandems, but I currently feel great and I'm in pretty good shape for 49. There's always AFF and SL instruction, too, if I start getting to creaky to haul humans around on my chest. Every year I see a few fresh faces at the DZ with new ratings, and I figure they won't need me much anymore. Then every year I seem to work just as much as the year before, maybe more. I sometimes joke with my passengers, that when choosing a TM they want to look for a little touch of gray hair, just like what you want to see on your airline captain who's flying your plane. Are you willing to contribute to the overall dropzone environment or will you bolt as soon as your piece is over?
