First rig, first pack job, first jump of season...

Recommended Posts

So,

I'm a new skydiver with 30 jumps, and haven't jumped since October or November 2006.

In the meantime, I've been building my first rig. So far I have a container ('00 G3), a reserve ('00 Raven 218), and a main on the way ('04 Triathlon 190).

Anyway, by the time it warms up enough to jump here, I should have my rig completed and ready.

I'll hopefully be jumping my own pack job for the first time, on my own first rig for my first jump of what will only be my second season, after a several month break..

This should be quite scary!

Anyone else ever been in a similar situation?

If you haven't jumped a 190 in the past, do yourself a favor and do your first jump or two back on whatever canopy it was that you did your last jump on. Yes, even if that means you'll have to rent a rig.

There are many people out there who can explain from personal experience why the above is a good idea.

If you're worried about jumping your packjob, have a packer or rigger watch you pack it. If they give you the OK, it should be fine.

I agree about the canopy. If it's your first jump on the 190, you may want to jump a canopy one size bigger first.

Good Luck!

Gotta agree with Skybytch. Go ahead and do a couple jumps on whatever you were flying last yr. I went rom a Manta 288 to a Trithalon 190 myself on jump # aprox.15 to 20. There is a hell of a dif. I did not have a several month break between though. I love my Triath. It can be somewhat zippy when I want it to and a little forgiving when I need it to. Great soft openings for the most part unless I've rushed my pack job. I have had a couple hard openings but nothing major. I love my Trithalon. I am in no way overly experienced so take this as you will. Congrats on your new rig dude. Have fun and be safe. Blue Skies.

I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.

+1, I got my rig on new year's eve but I got it with main 170, so that it's 1:1 wingload for me, so had to wait 7 weeks before I actually downsized to it and was confident about my landings on all the previous ones). 230->210 and 210->190 transitions seemed much more drastic to me though than 190->170, go figure..

stay safe and have fun! jumping your own pack job is a lot of fun and it helps to build confidence and understanding of the rig tremendously! was packing ever since AFF graduation.

blue skies!

What Bytch said... but if you do the triple F thing... that will be 3 cases of beer + 1 penalty case for assessed for owing a back-log of 3 or more cases.

:P

Anyway... yes... I've been in a similar situation... even more so over since getting my rigger's ticket... having jumped a new rig for the first time that I assembled and packed both the reserve and main.

That's a good thought. I'll definitely do that.

The canopy I learned on was an F111 sharpchuter 245.. Much different than the tri will be.

The only other smaller canopy I've jumped was a tempo 210, which was a reserve ride.

thanks for the input!
