I'm only going by the video that I have and they say that a sonic boom was clearly heard on the ground. Not saying its absolute truth but that is what they say.

It is and has been a point of contention for along time. There are plenty of "citation needed"s on wikipedia's entry on him.

He says he broke it, some say he only reached .9, etc.
