mr_woosh 0 #1 January 30, 2007 Greetings! Not sure if it was already done, but I tried to do search and failed, so... Being new to the sport I was curious as to how many places are there to go jump around me (although still working on my A license ) and the list here is fantastic but does not provide a big visual picture. So I figured I'd do it for myself and started a map on communitywalk.com. Now that I think about it if it was not done before it might be interesting for the rest of the community too. I don't really have time and dedication to put each and every location there, so at this point I just did a few pointers to SoCal locations around me. I figured if there's interest and people are willing to log in at least one location from the list we'd have a nice visual reference to drop zones. You have to be registered to make modifications to the map but it takes less than a minute. Lets see if there's interest, if not I guess I'll be logging locations based on the areas I'll be planning to visit and whoever finds the map useful is welcome to check it out, no need to register to just see the map. anyways, map is located here: http://www.communitywalk.com/map/60751 Blue Skies! Edited to add: oops, just realized that events and places to jump could be a better place to post it, if so could those in charge move it there? wonder2006 0 #2 January 30, 2007 Have a look at the thread on Google Earth: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2363890;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread. The DZ's around you may not be on there yet, but you can just add them. Anyone know if you can just convert that to Google Maps?
kingbunky 3 #3 January 30, 2007 i think there's a frappr map for dropzones posted here somewhere too."Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001
Jumpah 0 #4 January 30, 2007 This site maintains a large database of DZs, and since its not controlled by the USPA you will find USPA member and non-member dropzones here. USPA publishes their member dropzones by state in their magazine and website.
mr_woosh 0 #5 January 30, 2007 Found only frappr map of members. I see several benefits to my map: 1) has DZs presented visually, which at least to me is more pleasing as I don't have to go and check out where the hell that address is (and I guess my problem here is that I am not from US so I am not that familiar with specific city locations, even in california) 2) you can enter DZs be long/alt or address, which I am not sure if frappr can do (just don't have any experience with frappr) 3) it is based on google maps that allows to switch map to satelite mode and study the aerial shot of the DZ. One of the reasons to create the map was that I've read a thread where a new jumper had troubles spotting the DZ and it made me thinking just how familiar I am with the area around Perris, where I jump.. This map let's me lookup the pics for other DZs too, as I sure will do some traveling once I get my A license but than again, I never insisted it will be useful to anyone buy me, just figured I'd share the idea
pilotdave 0 #6 January 30, 2007 Not sure if you missed the dropzone locator on this site... it does pretty much the same thing: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/dropzone/finder.cgi?state=ca&city=perris&search=addr&country=us&rad=200 for example. mr_woosh 0 #7 January 30, 2007 wow, sorry my bad, totally missed that one. I guess this thread can be closed :)
pilotdave 0 #8 January 30, 2007 Hey, it's not easy to find and not very well advertised as being different from the dropzone listings on the site. Needs to be better integrated. Dave
mr_woosh 0 #9 January 30, 2007 yeah, I wish I knew that dz locator here has a google map integrated into it with several DZs on it, would save me the trouble of creating the other map :) I just did browse by region and the listing gives you map of only one DZ at a time, I guess I should have done my homework better :) Thanks for the link Dave, appreciate it!
