chrismgtis 0 #6 December 18, 2006 QuoteWhat was the final resulte of the landing any injuries Na, I landed and went to my knees. Still had a little momentum, so I kind of fell over on my hands. I just thought the picture was hilarious, especially with the canopy still open straight up in the air. Oh and DAMN, I ripped my new jump suit on the left leg. I've had some pretty wild landings the last few weeks. The other week I landed and fell over on my stomach and slid, slip n slide style for like 15 feet. That was fun. Still trying to get the hang of landing and running. I have a habit of touching the ground and stopping, so I fall over. I've gotten it right a few times, but still practicing.Rodriguez Brother #1614, Muff Brother #4033 Jumped: Twin Otter, Cessna 182, CASA, Helicopter, Caravan
DougH 270 #7 December 18, 2006 If your serious about consistently eating shit, then my advice would be to have a instructor video your landings, and give a serious debrief. The picture is pretty funny, but there it also has a serious side. It can go from funny slide, to a broken leg very fast. Every one has a different learning curve but getting video of the landings can only help!!"The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

chrismgtis 0 #11 December 18, 2006 QuoteWhat canopy are you jumping and at what wingloading? If you finish the flare properly, you shouldn't be running on a regular basis. I'm not really sure. It's usually a 230. I have no idea as far as wingloading. I realize what I'm doing wrong, it's just a matter of practice. On occasion I may not bring the toggles all the way down, or I will flare a second or two too early. I think I still need to flare about a second later than I have been. Once I started doing that I should be getting some really soft landings. The landings aren't hard at all, trust me. I just land a lot and fall over . I've been dragged a few feet by the canopy a few times. I'm getting a lot better at it. The last jump this weekend I landed on my feet and didn't have to make a step. I was for a while flaring a little too high and I landed a little hard a few times, but nothing serious. I hurt my leg a little bit the other week, but no big deal.Rodriguez Brother #1614, Muff Brother #4033 Jumped: Twin Otter, Cessna 182, CASA, Helicopter, Caravan

JohanW 0 #14 December 18, 2006 I didn't find it very funny - I have seen people break wrists that way. PLF, or slide, or stand it up. Not necessarily in that order of preference. But don't take the fall on your hands.Johan. I am. I think.

ladyhawke 0 #18 December 18, 2006 I would try so hard to stand up my landings and have suffered the consequences from broken akle to a severly damaged knee that required surgery! Now, I just plan to PLF and do with exquisite style and grace ( ha! ha!). Everyone laughs at how I land but I don't care I don't want anymore injuries! The standing up part will come one day!:)"It is our choices that show what we truly are far more than our abilities." - A. Dumbledore
chrismgtis 0 #19 December 18, 2006 The picture makes it look so much more dramatic than it is. I basically landed softly on my feet. I had a little momentum going forward slightly enough to drop to my knees. Then I just kind of fell over and used my hands so I didn't fall into the dirt with my face. Wasn't even as bad as tripping over a shoe lace. That's why I'm laughing about it. The picture made it look so much worse than it really was. Especially with that canopy straight up in the air.Rodriguez Brother #1614, Muff Brother #4033 Jumped: Twin Otter, Cessna 182, CASA, Helicopter, Caravan
champu 1 #20 December 18, 2006 This photo is from a week or so ago. Fairly light winds but the jumper was landing a little bit crosswind. Started to reach for the ground (hence canopy is off to the right) but when he realized what he had done, went into a pretty good plf/roll. No style points, but he did a good job doing what he needed to do. Except of course the rule about, "not falling down when someone is pointing a camera at you." Heehee, we should start a "Post your wipeouts" thread eh? BTW, the girl that took the photo me falling, did get a shot about a second prior to that one. So you can kind of see what I meant about falling to my knees then going forward. I'll attach that picture. In the other picture you can see that I flared too high. So, like I said thats still my problem. I am looking at about a 45 degree angle, but still trying to get the hang of flaring lower.Rodriguez Brother #1614, Muff Brother #4033 Jumped: Twin Otter, Cessna 182, CASA, Helicopter, Caravan

skymynci 0 #23 December 19, 2006 I have been lucky (?) enough to have landed really well on each of my 12 jumps, by just waiting until I think its too late and then just 'feeling' the flair. my boyf thinks its because I can only see out of one eye and therefore see perspective more clearly. Eye however (geddit? - sniggers childishly) think that its all natural spectacular talent! icevideot 0 #24 December 19, 2006 Quoteits a new style of landing used by most students also known as the Face Plant Landing There are definate ways to avoid that In my experience, the first hurdle to a proper plf is having your feet too wide. If you start with a stable, shoulder width base you most likely will hit feet, knees, head/face. On every landing your final approach should be done with feet and knees together with knees slightly bent. If everything times out well you can always take a step but if you screwed up you will not likely get them together in time. There is my 2 cents."... this ain't a Nerf world."
