SkyFrog 0 #1 September 6, 2004 I am trying to get information about the new USPA Advanced Instructor Course. I have read what the webpage has to say...but the big thing I want to know is what are they teaching? What are the requirements to attend? As a Coach looking to get my AFF will this help me? Will it help me be a better Coach? He who laughs last, thinks slowest!
slotperfect 7 #2 September 6, 2004 From the Safety & Training Newsletter dated 18 August, 2004: QuoteADVANCED INSTRUCTOR COURSE The new USPA Advanced Instructor Course, which has been in development for the past two years, was approved by the USPA Board of Directors during the July 2004 Board meeting. The AIC has been designed to meet several specific goals regarding USPA course directors: • Improve the course director’s ability to evaluate rating course ground training sessions • Improve course director’s ability to evaluate rating course candidate air skills • Improve standardization of all USPA rating courses • Improve candidate training through active and dynamic classroom sessions • Improve the candidate’s own student training abilities through application of active and dynamic classroom sessions • Training for administrative skills necessary to facilitate rating courses • Develop conflict resolution skills There is no requirement to attend this course. USPA encourages all coaches and instructors interested in improving their training and evaluation skills to participate in one of the upcoming courses, even if they do not wish to become a course director. Completion of this course serves as an alternate requirement to have three years experience as an instructor before becoming a course director. It will also serve as an alternate requirement to the videoed first-jump course canopy training demonstration for becoming an AFF Instructor Rating Course Director. The two sets of requirements will run in parallel to one another, allowing a choice of two paths for a candidate to follow toward becoming a course director. The courses are scheduled over a four-day period. Check the USPA rating course calendar at www.uspa.org for dates and locations of upcoming courses. That answers your question about requirements, but unfortunately says nothing about the course content. The first one I see on the schedule is in 08 - 11 January 2005 in DeLand: QuoteAdvanced Instructor Course, Skydive DeLand, DeLand, FL FFI: e-mail Rob Laidlaw, (386) 801-8510Arrive Safely John
matthewcline 0 #3 September 6, 2004 My understanding is this is for after you get an "I" rating and are looking toward a Course Director position. I have not been to the course but have talked to a DZo who is an AFF-I, SL-I and T-I. He stated it is very simular to the old BIC course in theory. Trying to get all Instructors teaching under a simular method. Maybe all of us "I's" can get more info as more attend the course. MattAn Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
slotperfect 7 #4 September 6, 2004 QuoteMy understanding is this is for after you get an "I" rating and are looking toward a Course Director position. Anyone with a USPA Coach Rating can take the course. "There is no requirement to attend this course. USPA encourages all coaches and instructors interested in improving their training and evaluation skills to participate in one of the upcoming courses, even if they do not wish to become a course director. " As far as preparing graduates for a Course Directorship: "Completion of this course serves as an alternate requirement to have three years experience as an instructor before becoming a course director." QuoteI have not been to the course but have talked to a DZo who is an AFF-I, SL-I and T-I. He stated it is very simular to the old BIC course in theory. Trying to get all Instructors teaching under a simular method. FYI the BIC used to be a prerequisite to the Jumpmaster Certification Course under the old USPA rating system. I'm sure a lot of the content is the same; some of it really works well. I am told that Rob Laidlaw is the Course Director . . . he is a registered dotcommer ("sdu"), but hasn't logged on in almost three years so PMs are a poor way to contact him. His email address is rob@skydiveu.com. I sent him an email to ask the content question. I'll post the results when I get a reply.Arrive Safely John
mustard 0 #5 September 6, 2004 QuoteI sent him an email to ask the content question. I'll post the results when I get a reply. The next version of the IRM (coming out this fall) will have the syllabus for the new AIC in it. Many of us on the BOD went to the pilot and now it's ready for prime time. You'll be able to see the content is when you see the next IRM. I plan to go to the first one that is held in Texas! *** DJan
matthewcline 0 #6 September 7, 2004 Hey John, Just wanted to clarify my previous post. I thought the goal of the AIC was to get all Course Directors on a simular sheet of Instructional music. That is why I made the Old BIC reference, since it was designed to start us all on the same sheet fo instructional music. And I figured (probably incorrectly) that very few would want to attend an AIC course and not already be an instructor. MattAn Instructors first concern is student safety. slotperfect 7 #7 September 7, 2004 From Mike Turoff's (MikeTJumps) BOD Meeting Notes post in the USPA BOD Elections Forum: QuoteThere was a lot of discussion over the incorporation of an Advanced Instructor Course into our existing system to maintain the integrity and quality control of our current rating system. The specifics of the course and syllabus are complete. The course will be implemented as an optional course for those interested in being an Advanced Instructor or wanting to be a Course Director in any discipline in the future. It does not change the current methods of becoming a course director; it just offers a new method too. The course is approved and when the IRM outline is finished, it will be sent to the S&T Committee for final review and approval. Here are the questions I posed to Rob Laidlaw: Quote-what is the content of the course? -is there any similarity in content to the old BIC? -what relationship does this course have to the old I/E rating? -will the I/E rating become obsolete? I am sharing them here to stimulate discussion both before and after I get a response from him.Arrive Safely John
