Bad Reaction From a Wuffo

All the talk, skydiving T-shirts and putting it under 'hobbies/sports' on ever form and forum you can soon fades.

I still wear a lot of parachuting T-shirts after 11 years because most boogies, events, and gear purchases come with free T-shirts (I think I got four from the first Go Fast games), I'm lazy about shopping, lazy about laundry, and it means I don't have to wear stinky dirty clothes without spending time in a strip mall or laundry room.

OTOH I do tend to save those for weekends when I'm actually skydiving and therefore less likely to get stupid questions.

[spoken in my best Linus voice]
In his book "Beyond the Pleasure Principle", Freud speculated that there existed death drives in conflict with sex drives. This opposition, he thought, could explain much about the fundamental forces shaping individuals and societies, while also pointing toward explanations for their self-destructive and outwardly aggressive behavior. Therefore, I suspect that if I were to get laid on a consistent basis, I would be able to forego this sublimation of my sexual drive via my reckless skydiving behavior. :S

My wife worked with a group of brain doctors. I have heard the "death wish" line before. They're really just jealous because they are afraid to live, or be different. I pity them...

Recently I had a golf cart catch on fire and the batteries blew up in my face. The second the acid touched my eyes, my first thought was "can you skydive blind". Thankfully there was a hose 20' feet away, and there was no lasting damage.

Now when people tell me they are going to play golf, I act horrified and tell them how dangerous the sport is ;)

Yep, it becomes like that!

All the talk, skydiving T-shirts and putting it under 'hobbies/sports' on ever form and forum you can soon fades.

I still wear skydiving t-shirts everywhere - I can't afford any other clothes:P

I did realise recently how glad I am that I'll never have to represent the University club at another freshers fair though. having to explain to everyone that wanders along the 'no you're not definitely going to die' and 'actually you'd be surprised at how irrelevant fear of heights can be in skydiving' and 'yes actually we are able to use a spare canopy if we need to.'

I was just so sick of it at the end of the last one, people wander over and watch the video we had playing - "So do you want to skydive?"

"Oh no, I could never do that, you guys are all crazy!"

"Well Fuck off then":D
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

He... I walked into a tattoo palor to talk to them about a skydiving tattoo. I was pretty nervous about the tattoo concept. They were freaked out, that I jump out of airplanes. :D

I'm going to search for statistics on golf injuries to do a comparison. Maybe we can make Andy Copeland happy by finding something to use instead of Skydiving -vs- Auto accidents!

I'll be back...

I get the whole thing, like we all have. All the stupid, misinformed bullshit about perfectly good planes, death wishes, etc....

I see no way of convincing anyone who has no inclination to learn about it-or- *gasp* try it for themselves.

just brush them off with some humor....or admit that you do wish for death, and "actually right now i'm thinking of taking some others with me."

I wear skydiving t-shirts all the time, and one look at my car tells all that it's my "Thing"....too bad for them that they will never know what WE know. :)

I feel that you have an extremely arrogant attitude! Just because you skydive does not make you any braver or better than the next person. I know that I would much rather jump from an airplane than saw open a human being's skull and possibly be the reason why he never wakes up again. That takes an enormous amount of courage, self-confidence, skill and all the other attributes you feel you alone have.

I also doubt that they lose any sleep over your pity.

Let me put your self righteous indignation into perspective for you...

First...you took my reference wrong. The brain doctors I'm referring too are psychologist, not neuro surgeons.

As far as my arrogance goes, where is there arrogance in my statement? Why is it arrogant of me to state an opinion of how I feel when someone makes a statement that they know nothing about? Did I pick something they do and pass judgment on them?

Oh and I do pity those who sit back and pass judgment on others to justify their own inability to be different if they so chose. I know these people personally, you do not. "Professionals" who mimic their patients for laughs when they're drinking, people that I wouldn't let walk through my front door.

As far as them losing sleep over my pity, you're right, the illegal pharmaceuticals I've seen them share are probably the culprit ;)

Arrogant because I sky dive? If you ever jump with me, you'll see why thats pretty funny :P

For some reason, he was downright upset and accused me of "having a death wish". He kept saying that he was a doctor and wanted me to see a psychiatrist to analyze my motivation or whatever.

That might have been the party line when he went tomed school. In Poynter and Turoff's "Parachuting", there is a mention of this in the chapter on emergencies:

Quote

Why we jump. The explanation used to be simple: jumpers were crazy. Some psychologists talked of Freudian death wishes while others believed in fear displacement or denying fear in their lives by directing their attention to another more manageable one. Others theorized that participants in high-risk sports were acting out psychopathic fantasies in an attempt to make up for feelings of inadequacy or to demonstrate omnipotence. So much for the non-jumping, ground hog, whuffo, head shrink community.

It goes on to talk about a study done by Bruce Ogilvie at San Jose State University in 1973 of participants in high-risk sports that had some pretty positive things to say about those participants. This may or may not be exactly that study but it seems to address the same things. Since the guy is a doctor, maybe having something in "the literature" that says you aren't crazy might help. On the other hand, if the guy has lived with this assumption for 30 years, it's hard to do much to change it.
