PACKING COMPETITION

Recommended Posts

bigway . . . now we're getting somewhere . . . good to see someone stepping up to the plate with a real cash prize. I think you can get a lot of participation for 1000GBP. Unfortunately, I won't make it out there so this whole thing better be videotaped . . .

of course . . . wussy talk . . . spoken by the fearless one . . . I suppose you enjoy increasing the element of risk in a sport that is full of it?? If people start trash packing and becoming complacent enough to rely on their reserve, then we obviously have a problem.

If people start trash packing? Like no one does it anyway?

Like scoop pointed out, if you're not going to jump it the incentive to make it a real packjob goes out the window. IMO modern parachutes are very well designed, as long as a few really basic conditions are met (see Drew's post) they will open pretty reliably - everything else is fine tuning. I just don't see packing competitions as measurably increasing the risk of the next jump.

Having said that, I've never packed in a phone booth - how does that even work?:D

you know, originally I was thinking about a packing competition between actual DZ packers who do student gear all day. If someone out there is trash-packing tandems, I think they need a talking to.

Eh? Jumping a mega speed packed canopy for the competition isn't going to affect the way they pack normally.

Do you really think a speed packing competion is going to make the competition packjobs done by profesional packers inherently unsafe? Any more unsafe than the trash packs done by average jumpers everyday, all around the world?

If you do then the competition is pointless anyway, since the packjobs produced will not be real, useable packjobs.

So what you do you propose specifically? A comp. where anyone can pack however they like in the fastest time possible, but to complete the contest, the packer must jump it ?? This is an interesting concept and I don't totally disagree with it, but you have to admit that it will get crazy with some people just jamming canopies into d-bags. I hope you have faith in your riggers.

I should have expected something like this from a Brit. I just checked your website and you have a photo of multiple bar shots being poured (unknown brand) right on the main page of your skydiving website. You guys do things a little differently I guess . . .

Its not a new idea.

Vis a vis these...B|

Mines is the brand new orange Crossfire :) I'd just got it the weekend before and done a couple of jumps on it...B| Still kicked ass, but I don't think I'm ready to try this on my brand new VX yet! :o

The last 2 pictures in the hangar were taken after we'd left Sam to it (He was taking too long!)

Blindfolded packing. Fastest time wins, if you don't jump the packjob you're disqualified.:)

We did that about 2 weeks ago for night jumps. Everyone had to jump their packjob or they WERE disqualified. Only five people participated this year, and unfortunately I came in second place with a lousy time of 9 minutes and some change.
Fun fact-Everyone who did the blindfolded contest had fine openings, however, two of the people who did not both had cutaways on the same jump doing a two way with eachother-true story
That should teach them.

Does that mean you could trash pack the thing. I mean a real, just stuff it in the bag and close the container in a s quick as possible and only incur a maximum of 60 second penalty :P
Could have it packed in 2 mins + 60 second penalty = Winner! :D

Have you ever tried to trash pack your rig?
I tried. Three times. On fourth I decided it will be faster to pack it as usual - at least to the moment the canopy is in the bag.
* Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *

I am a brit, and i would like to think we don't do things that differently. Although looking here under 'movie myths' i would like to ask the following: where the fuck can you get 'typically' 80 seconds freefall without O2, although maybe i'm, wrong if these guys are pulling at 2-2.5 grand :S

With a decent track you can get 80 seconds at a lot of places:P. Seriously though, that FAQ was written years ago by people who were probably RAPS students at the time and certainly aren't still at the club - we just can't be arsed to change it.

Oh, and the pic of the shot glasses? That was taken in a nightclub in Exeter on a weekday. So sue us for wanting to get University students drunk:S Although given the carnage seen at an average DZ fancydress party that was a pretty mild night - so chill out, 'k?;)

H-mm it's not rare practice on some DZ's here to bring the first load (and some times last, or in case of someone jubillee )to 5 km (~16.5 grand)...without O2 of course:)...
Regarding packing competition reglament: If it nessesary to jump the packjob (which of course resonable) what about good packers who does not jump at all? Is the packjob can be "proven" by jumping by 3rd person empowered to act for that packer?
Why drink and drive, if you can smoke and fly?
