Side-By-Side:Do you induce a downplane and cut away?

Recommended Posts

although i might react differently if IN the actual situation:

don't fix it if it ain't broke! if you can give riser input & it's a stable side-by-side, why mess with it? no one's answering my questions posted earlier though >:(

Help me out, here. How does forcing a downplane contribute to a clean cutaway?

Theoretically, it gets the canopies away from each other, minimizing the risk of entanglement when the main is cutaway. But, as others have indicated, it is quite possible it will introduce a whole other host of problems at a very low altitude.

I have never done anything with two out, but to induce a DP I would think it should be done by pulling down on the outside rear riser of each canopy. If you are aggressive enough with your input I would presume you could get DP with either one, used by itself. Possible but difficult.
If the canopies are similar in performance and size they should be straight out from one another. at this point the DP should hold itself in but I don't know, since I have never done any of this stuff with two out, just CRW. How would your hand get caught?

Sounds like Derrick is the man to talk to, ask him. Hooknswoop.

I think to say this, only after I went through the process of trying to figure it out. Dah

I have had two canopy's out at a very low altitude due to my AAD firing. I performed a canopy transfer which was very scary at that altitude did a 180 turn and landed, i was very lucky. I have seen several jumpers land two chutes out in both configurations, side by side and in the 'stacked' form, one on top of the other. I have also seen what happens when a side by side goes into a down plane all by itself at 50'-it's real ugly. I suggest prevention for your first line of defense-no aggressive turns around your AAD set altitude and to solve all problems before you get there. If not i would force a down plane and cut away, if you turn one canopy the other will automatically turn the other way.
But remember any thing you do or don't do can make it better or worse.Prevention is your best bet.
