Evelyn 0 #1 August 21, 2006 So I had 2 out, normal opening and found my reserve flying next to my main. Cut away my main and landed my reserve (winds were really choppy and inconsistent that day so that was one of the reasons I opted to cut away my main and land my reserve). We could not figure out why my reserve had deployed. It was definitely not a cypress fire. I had checked my reserve pin on the ground and it was fine (did not have it checked on the plane), I had not bumped into anything on the plane or during my skydive. There was a lot of slack on my RSL - like 5 - 7 ". Some people think this may have caused the reserve deployment, my rigger said no way. So what do you think? faulknerwn 38 #3 August 21, 2006 How much slack was in the reserve cable? I.e. I've seen ones where the little ball is right next to the handle, and others where there is 6+ inches free...
Reginald 0 #4 August 21, 2006 Did you have the excess reserve cable tucked into the velcro?"We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. We've finally found him. We're surrounded. That simplifies things." CP

If the Infinity is like most containers on the market, I believe an RSL-deployed reserve would leave a visible kink in the reserve cable. Can a rigger confirm this? matt91078 0 #6 August 21, 2006 And the way the RSL is set up to pull the reserve cable through the two rings making that kink takes a good bit of force. Matt

rwieder 0 #8 August 21, 2006 QuoteSo what do you think? Question: and i cannot believe it hasn't been posed yet, is why in the heck did you cut-away from a stable 2 out configuration? If it was "down planing" i could understand, but you did mention "Stable Configuration" -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

Thanks matt You shouldnt tuck in the ball at the end of your ripcord into your velcro. On opening, the harness extends to its full length and having the ball in the velcro can put enough tension to pull the cable.Remster
Scoop 0 #14 August 21, 2006 Wow, thats cool to know. I just got my own rig and I thought I was being sensible by tucking it in out of the airflow. I'll make sure its free to whip me from now on if it means no 2 out at pull time. Our tandem instructors habitually "follow through" with their reserve ripcords, but RSLs always pull faster than humans. Fortunately, none of those cables have broken strands, so I can re-use those ripcords if I have to.
