Peej 0 #1 August 10, 2006 I'm posting this here instead of the video forum because i thought it applied to skydivers more than just us vidiots. I was browsing through the WM2006 website and noticed that while there are a fair amount of female teams, very few have female camera flyers, why do you think that is? Are girls just not interested in doing camera? I know of three girls on here who fly camera - Lewmonst, Dragon 2 and Weegegirl - and from what i've seen, they do it very well. At my home DZ there was one girl who flew camera on tandems and four way until she broke herself and was out for ages, hopefully she'll be back soon. My girlfriend is someone that i'm urging to get into it. I was even chatting to our Female 4 Way team before they left and they mentioned that they would love it if a girl flew camera for them. I don't really know where i'm going with this, i guess i'm asking for your opinion, what do you think of girls flying camera? And if you're a girl skydiver, does it interest you? All opinions and points for debate are welcome Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
dragon2 2 #2 August 10, 2006 Don't forget CaTo We have one other girl at our DZ doing tandem/AFF video, and there's one other girl doing FS4 video, she just started (first FS4 video was during Nationals LOL). but all in all, not many girls.... I dunno, I started skydiving because I wanted to film! ciel bleu, Saskia
BannanaGirl 0 #3 August 10, 2006 Absolutely 100%!!!!! I can't think of anything better to do than capture someones first time on Vid. And all the artistry you can apply to making a video with the music and the movements and stuff. I like creative stuff and I have always had a thing for making *cough* films. I guess the monumental cock ups where you forget the spare battery and forget to turn on will all be experienced but nobody gets good without screwing up a few times do they. I can take a beasting so I am not worried about that. Only thing is when do vidiots get to do fun skydives rather than working ones. I mean sometimes all they seem to do is jump and chase others around the sky for weeks on end? Or is it not really like that?
jlmiracle 7 #4 August 10, 2006 I would fly camera - I just don't like the editing part. I'm technologically challenged, but I know that does not apply to most female skydivers. jBe kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Peej 0 #5 August 10, 2006 QuoteDon't forget CaTo Whoops, sorry! QuoteI dunno, I started skydiving because I wanted to film! That's so cool When it comes to girls though, i don't know, we have some great freefly and FS ladies at our DZ, but i think only one girl that's interested in camera I get questions from guys all the time about how do they get into it, lots of them want to watch how we edit, etc... Is there a reason for the male dominance? There shouldn't be! Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky

I mean sometimes all they seem to do is jump and chase others around the sky for weeks on end? Or is it not really like that? I know a few video guys who manage to fun jump quite a lot. Not every weekend but a lot none the less. But yeah, you can go for weeks at a time just doing work, still the interaction with the passengers and TI's is a lot of fun, it never feels like work Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
Peej 0 #7 August 10, 2006 What about 4way camera, there's very little editing there? Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
Judit 0 #8 August 10, 2006 I fly camera but due to lack of possibility of jumping here I mainly use it for coaching. Rarely I do tandem videos but when in the best case we can only do 5 jumps in a weekend and I'm the only freefly coach it's not a question. kaerodyne 0 #10 August 10, 2006 Peej Yip, the sport is male bias to some degree and for the most part the available percentage of girls in the sport keeps female camera flyers limited. I know for a fact that while working in NorCal last year that Kim (the only female camera flyer) was as professional and skilled as any guy, and the pax loved her. We do need to look into ways to cultivate and expose new girls to camera flying, but the cost of setting up, the cut throat nature of work dives. Puts alot of people off doing camera. There are also a few jumpers who think camera flying is a way to get jumps for FREE and maybe even a few $ in the pocket, but until you have done a full training camp with a solid 4-Way Team or pounded out 10 Tandems you will live in the fantasy world. My one team used our camera flyer as a go between for manifest, packing, calls, etc. we had more time to focus on the dive plans, creeping and de briefing. He did the admin side for us, and also shot Majik video of us. Peej ..... Go take it and make a few new hot video girls, as we have some of the finest looking girls in skydiving back home. quade 4 #13 August 10, 2006 QuoteI was browsing through the WM2006 website and noticed that while there are a fair amount of female teams, very few have female camera flyers, why do you think that is? Are girls just not interested in doing camera? A part of the reason is the ridiclous rules that ALLOW a male camera flyer on an all female team. Personally I don't think there needs to be a special category of competition just for women because I feel that women can compete in this sport just as well as men. HOWEVER, if there is going to be a WOMEN'S category . . . hey . . . the camera flyer IS part of the team and if it's going to be an all woman team, let's make the teams all women. As for other female camera flyers on DZ.com, have you seen the Jump for the Cause calendar? I could swear there was at least one female camera flyer featured.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
jlmiracle 7 #14 August 10, 2006 Quote What about 4way camera, there's very little editing there? Actually, I would prefer to particpate in the 4-way instead of videoing it. I think I got discouraged because the first camera helmet i had crushed my head and after 2 camera jumps my head really really hurt and I could not jump anymore. Then there was the time the camera shut off on a tandem video (many years ago) and I felt too bad, couldn't handle the anxiety of screwing up what could be someone's only skydive in their life. I treated it as if I were filming the birth of a first child or something to that affect. jBe kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. brierebecca 0 #15 August 10, 2006 I've flown some camera for headdown big-ways and VRW, as well as some tandem and AFF jumps. I also use it when I coach freefliers. I enjoy it. riggerrob 643 #16 August 10, 2006 Take it from a tandem master ... we would much rather share the airplane - especially Cessnas - with a petite female videographer than a large, bulky, cumbersome, awkward, male videographer. Also, having female videographers sets a good example/role model for female students who are contemplating skydiving on a regular basis.

karenmeal 0 #19 August 11, 2006 I just need the money to get a video setup. I would have gone to video sooner if I felt that it could have been more lucrative than packing. I am planning to start doing tandem video to keep me in the air through grad-school. My mom recently suggested to me that she buy me a camera helmet for christmas!!! What a good mom. So far I love it. After doing tandems for a year it's neat to see their face instead of just here them screaming. Plus, you get to work quite a bit on your flying skills and canopy skills. ltdiver 3 #21 August 11, 2006 Let's see....there's Karen Wood who took her team, Carolina Ice, to a Silver Medal in our 2005 USPA Nationals. Then there's Wendy Smith who's been at every large skydiving event since I've been in the air (10 years).... She's absolutley AWESOME! How 'bout Jennifer who filmed the 2001 USPA National's Gold Medal Team... Of course, you can't forget Elena Vertiprakhova who topped her Russian 8-way Team for their Bronze Medal just today at the 2006 World Meet! (and Gold Medal in the 2003 World Championships!)
