Losing wedding ring in freefall?

Recommended Posts

Recently married friend of mine is paranoid about losing his wedding ring during a freefall (e.g. while holding student harness during AFF, throwing out the pilotchute, etc.). He rather puts it into the pocket of his jumpsuit. I am just wondering - has anyone here actually lost your wedding ring during freefall or canopy ride? :o How it happened? :S

I know a tandem instructor whose student lost their ring on his first paid tandem jump.... When the hand gets cold at higher altitude, apparently they get loose and can fall off...

I had a friend many years ago who lost part of her finger because her wedding ring stuck on something.

Your friend is wise. I'd wear gloves over a ring, or take the ring off.

I suppose it's possible to lose the ring,,,
I'd be more concerned about losing the finger...
At first i would take my wedding band OFF and undo my belt buckle,,, ( i almost always wear a leather belt ) slip the ring onto it and then re buckle it.....so that I would always have it with me, but not be vulnerable to injury...
I almost never wear gloves when jumping,,,(until the extreme cold sets in )..
then i stoppped doing that..... when I almost lost it into a Johnny-On-The-Spot !!!:o:S[:/]:ph34r:B|....
Now the ring is well 'embedded' into my finger and I seldom do jumpmaster duties, so I just stay careful,, when grabbing floater bars or camera handles, and in the last 20 years or so, have had no problems...
But if there is any play in the ring or if it fits loosely,,, best to be careful...

A friend of mine lost his Aggie Ring in freefall years ago. Although this one came out of his jumpsuit pocket, not off his hand. I used to wear my rings and wear glove over them, anymore I just take them off and leave them in my gear bag or locker at the DZ while jumping.

That way I don't lose the rings and I don't get the rings caught on something and lose a finger.

Yup; she and her then-husband were actually the managers, and not the DZO...

Seen the results of that too. After years of marriage, Valinda just lets me not wear a ring. The whole world knows I'm married, and I don't like rings on my hands. :)

DO NOT WEAR RINGS WHILE SKYDIVING!

Maybe I just saw too many scare-tactic videos in NROTC classes...

Edit: I definitely don't like seeing tandem students with rings on. Let's say you get that little thing hooked into the drogue bridle. Guess what will give first?

Former boss of mine had a class ring that he wore all the time. One day he was working on a cable race. He jumped down from the cable race when he was done, but the ring hooked one of the cable retainers. He continued down, the ring (and all the skin from his finger) stayed there. Needless to say he lost the finger.

Gloves can reduce this risk but do not eliminate it.

I lost my wedding ring in freefall just months after I got married. so I bought a new one. Im around equipment all the time plus the skydiving thing, so I dont even wear a ring anymore unless its a special occasion. too many ways to loos a finger.

I always took mine off, because I noticed that mine became considerably looser in the cold and I jump without gloves. IT easily fell off when swimming in cold water, so I suspected that the combination of cold air and wind would even more easily take it. (I pictured a wave off in which I watched it fly off my hand right before line stretch...)

Ironically, the last time I took it off, I thought I left it in my car, but after jumping I discovered I apparently didn't. I checked all throughout the car, at home, and at the dropzone. It's utterly gone. So, in short, if you take it off (and I'd recommend that!), don't be careless with it.

Travis and I exchanged rings in our wedding ceremony in the plane and jumped with them that time. We take them off before jumping now - mostly leave them in the car. We'll forget we have them on every now and then, but usually try to take them off. It's not worth losing a finger.

I'm not sure exactly how it was split up, but the checks were made out to Boatman-Hall, which would imply Dave Boatman and Jess Hall. I think that MS owned the dz student operations and ran the DZ, or something like that.

I got myself a plain black, rope-type necklace and I thread that through the centre of a ring thats special to me (not wedding ring) and wear it round my neck.

I've worn it few times jumping and it stays neatly under my shirt and jumpsuit although I have seen video of people necklaces flapping which is kinda scary.

Also, working as a mechanical engineer I don't want to damage it, or more importantly rip my finger off, so round my neck it lives.

At least if I lost a finger at work they might be able to do something about it, if I lost it at 12k feet on handle of aircraft I doubt I'd find it :D

As students we were not allowed to jump with any jewellery. It's a habit I've kept. I leave my rings at home when I go to the DZ.

Ten years ago my S/L instructor in Russia told us a story about someone who was jumping with wedding ring. The ring had a big diamond on it, which made it a perfect snag point. During deployment a suspension line wrapped around the diamond, and cut his finger off.

Next jump EVERYBODY removed all the rings they had - even the "non-removable" rings as they said before.

For me it is simple though, as I never wear any jewelry, so we decided not to buy wedding rings at all for our wedding.
