Jumping your reserve

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping to jump a demo version of my PD 176 reserve next weekend.

Is there anything I need to know about flying this canopy that will be different than flying my Silhouette (ZP/F111 hybrid 9 cell)?

I want to jump my reserve so when I do need it, I'll already know how to fly it.

Glad to see you doing this. I highly recommend it. The f-111, 7 cell reserve will not flare as efficiently as your main. The lower aspect ratio and porous material doesn't land as softly. Check the stall point up high. I've seen a few small reserves stall at less than full flare, not a good thing to discover at 5 feet. Come in for landing at full flight. When you flare, don't expect to plane out. Expect to flare all the way and expect to stop and plop. Be ready for a PLF. But since you're less than 1:1 wing loading, I bet you'll stand it up. :)

Actually, the PD reserve flies and lands fantastically. The same can't be said for most other reserves. I landed my old Tempo 120's fine, but I can swoop the piss out of my PD reserves.

Yep, any canopy can be swooped by an experienced pilot, and PD makes a really good product. I'm thinking she'll do just fine, but I wanted to let her know how it's probably going to differ from her main. And when in doubt, be prepared to PLF. :)

I just demoed a pdr 143 this weekend. I have a bad habit of looking at my canpoy as it opens and even though I told myself I wasn't going to on this jump I still did :S I took it to terminal and the opening shock would have been swift but okay if I hadn't looked up. Luckly I didn't feel it in my neck but it did strech out my back a bit. As far as landing flare it was beautiful, just like a spectre that I've jumped a few times.
