dharma1976 0 #2 June 12, 2006 is that when we are pulling down our sliders behind our necks??? if so it is so that the canopy will fly wider allowing it to fly better as it creats a more winglike shape to the parachute. since the slider is no longer constricting the lines at the top of the risers it allows the lines to spread otu more and let the canopy be wider and have better flying charachteristics. Are you referring to collapsing it? When you collapse a slider, the two cords that run through it cinch it up so it might look like it's been "tied." Collapsing the slider reduces drag, noise, and flapping against the lines (which may cause damage over the long run)."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Yes - especially to those of us who started out jumping rounds, which are whisper-quiet under canopy.

MB38 0 #8 June 13, 2006 I was told that the purpose of collapsing a slider - in addition to quelling the irritating flapping - is to prevent wear on the lines that would be caused by the flapping vibration when transferred through the slider grommets.I really don't know what I'm talking about. FrogNog 1 #9 June 13, 2006 QuoteI was told that the purpose of collapsing a slider - in addition to quelling the irritating flapping - is to prevent wear on the lines that would be caused by the flapping vibration when transferred through the slider grommets. That could be true. After a few hundred jumps the lines could need replacing. But I think we can agree the major purpose is to eliminate the annoying flapping. A third purpose is entertainment. Immediately after opening, some people don't want to be bothered with making sure they're not going to crash into anyone and turning back toward the dropzone and/or into the wind. Having an extra string to yank to quiet down the slider delays this "work" section of the skydive a little longer. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
