bigern13 0 #2 May 17, 2006 Totally up to tandem instructor. If he says yes, then yes. I have done it several times. Lots of fun to see friends face first hand. "I love 'lamp'." -SKYMAMA
kelpdiver 2 #3 May 17, 2006 the standard is usually much higher than just an A. One of the tandems fatalities (which are pretty rare events) was caused by a guy hitting the student (his mom).
darkwing 5 #4 May 17, 2006 In most cases for a guy with your experience the answer is no. In many cases the answer is no regardless of your experience level. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
moonglo 0 #5 May 17, 2006 Most places I've been its a minimum of 500 jumps and you still have to get the TM's and S&TA's ok.
Yossarian 0 #6 May 17, 2006 i did it on 45 jumps, 20 cat 8 pre-fs1, i didnt get very close though, at least 20ft separation, mostly more cos i was very cautious, great to see ur mates face as u climb onto the camera step, different setting to when u usually see them... Skymonkey13 0 #7 May 17, 2006 It would also be a good idea to get permission from the camera flyer if there is one on the jump, because his/her safety is at risk also and they have to keep their camera trained on the customer and can't be looking for others. johnny1488 1 #8 May 18, 2006 Its not just another skydive. I would not let someone of your experience go with me on a tandem. I dont have the experience yet in Tandem than I would want just anyone on a tandem with me. Like was said, 500 jumps is the norm, but it is up to the TI. jimmytavino 16 #9 May 18, 2006 Our club now uses a hard copy tandem 'lurker' form which must be signed by all involved. If either the TM OR the camera person declines to have the solo jumper join the dive, ( for ANY reason ) then it's a "no go". ...Lurkers can tend to over amp, or skate around near the Tandem. I have had more than one person slide right under me while i am concentrating on the student. i did see it coming and recovered Ok.... but it can add an unnecessary sense of "adventure" to the whole dive... On the other hand, if the solo is cool, follows instructions on where to be and where not to be, and leaves the dive as per the dirt dive, it is a nice thrill for the student.... It's all about freefall abilities and cooperation, NOT about showboating for a friend, and adding risk, to the mix...Most situations would call for more experience than A lic. level abilities..... " Sure ,, it's all fun and games, til someone gets creamed"...., and matching freefall speeds, ( or lack thereof) can often be a challenge and a surprise to the uninitiated... WILDBILLAQR 0 #10 May 18, 2006 The TI in that incedent is my S&TA and one of my best friends! I have jumped w/him on other tandums, but, when he took my feancee at the time(now my wife) I declined because of my involvment emotionally w/ the both of them, mostly because of my level of experiance. Most TI's that I know need to be confidant w/ your flying abilities before they will let you jump with them. Remember, a tandum is not a normal skydive. Don't be upset when /if they say no. They are looking out for all parties involved.---------------------------------------------- "Thats not smoke, thats BUCKEYE!!" AQR#3,CWR#

Technically, you've broken the ops manual, as the only person without FS1 in this situations should be the tandem student. Just because you stayed 20ft away doesnt meant you havent broken it, you intended to go out with the group. Personally, Ive never jumped with a tandem. I have asked about it (I want my brother and sister to do one) and Ive had oks from several TIs, aslong as theres a briefing before and I dont get stupid. One TI did say no (when I had about 150 jumps less), as especially with family you can make the tandem a target to aim at and show off, which doesnt help anyone and just puts people in danger.
