Is This Possible?

Recommended Posts

Subject line shortened by slotperfect

I have this idea of skydiving over a park near my parent's house in suburban Philadelphia, just a one-time thing. What would be involved in being able to do the jump legitimately, if it is possible to do this jump legitimately at all? If I find an aviator who is willing to take me on a flight in a Cessna and drop me off, would I need a special license to do this kind of jump? Right now I only have an A license.

My assumption is that I would need to get approval from the FAA and the local township as well. I think getting approval from the township would be a longshot since this is a residential area, though I think it may be possible because I remember seeing a parachutist in the air a few years ago in Bryn Mawr, PA, a town nearby (and there's no dropzone anywhere around this way, so it wasn't someone who had a bad spot)...

I would hope to do the jump in the very early hours of the morning, right around sunrise so that pretty much no one is around; I would *not* want the jump to get attention from any of the locals here.

And in case you're on a launching pad to flame me for asking this question -- my intentions are good, and if there's something obviously wrong with this scenario that I'm completely missing, I apologize for the ignorance; I'm here to learn. I have not been in this sport for long and there's a lot I don't know, which is why I'm posting this question here. I also did a search on this subject, but found no results.

Thank you...

For starters, read the USPA SIM for the definition of an open field demo. You'd need a C license to be able to do that kind of demo, so with just your A I don't think it'd be possible. And, the park may or may not qualify as an open field.

I'll leave the rest to experienced demo jumpers who know way more than I do on the topic.

Look in the USPA SIM for "PRO rating" and "exhibition jump."
You will need a letter of permission from the land owner/town council/city hall.
Then you file a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) with the FAA.
Somewhere along the way, you also have to get exhibition jump insurance, probably through USPA.

Depending on the size of the landing area you will need a C or D license.

You will need to file a NOTAM with the local FAA.

And you will likely need permission from the 'land owner' be it the city or what ever.

It most definitely 'can' be done legitimately as you mentioned.

There are a lot of hoops you'll need to jump through...

You don't yet qualify as far as license etc.
Easy enough to fix...jump your butt off!;)

You may have to work with the FAA on the notam thing depending on the area and the commercial air traffic going over the top.

Your early morning time seems like a good idea.

And in order to get the permission to jump in the park you may need to prove to the 'land owner' that you are insured against possible liability.

That type of 'demo' insurance IS available, but again you need the proper USPA qualifications to purchase it.

Now....if you would want to 'by-pass' all of this and do a Bandit jump, keep in mind both you and the pilot are in for some serious spankings if things go sideways.

I understand you want to do a demo for the family and friends...I use to do that all the time 20-25 years ago, but times and laws are different now.

Once qualified, you are looking at in the area of 700.00~1000.00 bucks to put on a 3 minute 'hero' show...

Might want to think about finding a way to fold a demo into something going on 'for' the city at the park and get THEM to PAY YOU when you're qualified!B|

Hope that answers your questions, if not...fire away!:)

Dont forget the groundcrew.
This is a park...you dont want to run down a little kid while landing or crash into the guy mowing the lawn.

What you want to do is a dream a lot of skydivers have....those of us that have done many many of these jumps know how much work and expense it can be....as Twardo says....for three minutes of hero.

This series of posts reminded me of some of the old Ted Mayfield/Sheridan SkySports demos; which I ALWAYS REFUSED to go on.

Ted has made more headlines with demos gone bad than any other one person that I know of.

The FAA was trying to get 'some' control of his demos and insituted a thing where he had to fill out a form with lots of info on the jumpers and their qualifications and submit it to the FAA prior to the demo.

Well, one Saturday I was out at Sheridan doing normal weekend jumps and while packing I overhear Ted tell this one very young jumper who is about to go on one of his demos, 'Now, if anyone asks your name is . . . .'

Just another day at Sheridan,

Jerry

There have been a lot of threads on this subject. You might try a search.Depending on the population of the area and how many people frequent this park you may our may not need anything more than permission from the property owner and to file a notam.Mike Mullins posted here on another thread that you did not need to file a notam anymore although I think it is a good idea.I also think if the jump numbers in your profile are correct you should be very careful.

& he should be careful because of his jump numbers, why, you forgot to tell him.

Tell me how many jumps I need & why, I'd love to do the same.

DZ.com is for gaining information, not for people telling you to do a search because "we are the INTERNET SKY GOD'S & have talked about this before.

If you say "do a search" a few links might be nice, if no links are added you are twat, or a twat with no links.

But hey, do a search on THAT >:(

The info is all there. Why should we write it all out again because you're too lazy to type "demo" into a box and click on "Search"?

If you are the one that wants the answers why should someone else do your search?

Does that make you a "twat" for being lazy?:P
