midnightrider 0 #1 July 15, 2004 hi all.. first of all i've got to say skydiving is the most awesome thing in the world--i went for the first time july 5th and when i was under the canopy i noticed that it felt like my ears were bleeding...when i got to the ground i was almost deaf and it took a couple of days to regain hearing in my left ear.. im still about deaf in my right ear and its funny because when i stand on my head its kinda like i regain hearing and it feels like there's fluid movin around in there but nothing is comin out...anyone had this happen to them and do you know how to treat it and prevent it from happening again??? thanks! nic
beowulf 1 #2 July 15, 2004 go see a doctor. A doctor would be able to give you real information about your problem. Anyone here would be guessing.
Kris 0 #3 July 15, 2004 It sounds like you may have had some mild congestion when you went on your skydive, preventing you from equalizing pressure properly. It could have been a one-off thing, but if it's chronic, you will need to see a doctor. Rupturing an ear drum (or even worse, a sinus cavity) isn't a fun thing to have happen. Do you have any sinus or allergy problems? Like the above poster said, a doctor will be your best bet for an answer.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Kris 0 #5 July 15, 2004 Quoteyeah i did have a small head cold the day i jumped---wish i had money to go to the doctor---that tandem broke the bank for the next 2 months! Be careful jumping like that. That's why the DZ asks you to fill out your medical info. That should have been caught before you went up. Get better and don't jump with a head cold again.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
Ruffles 0 #6 July 15, 2004 Yeah same thing happened to me. Took like 2 weeks before I got my hearing back. I can't explain the physiology of it, but something about inner fluid getting displaced due to pressure increase during freefall. I won't do that again. freakflyer9999 1 #8 July 15, 2004 I had a similar experience several years ago. I made 5 jumps that day with a mild head cold. On the first two jumps my ears stopped up, but cleared when I got to the ground. On the third jump the right ear didn't clear. For the next two weeks I had almost total hearing loss in my right ear. Then some of the hearing returned, but as confirmed by a hearing test, I now had only 65% hearing in my right ear. This continued for about two years, when I decided to schedule an appointment with an ear doctor. About two weeks before the appointment I heard a loud pop and my hearing returned. The doctor confirmed that I now had normal hearing in all the normal ranges, but still had a total loss in the high frequency ranges. I learned an invaluable lesson. Do Not Jump With A Head Cold. Beerlight 0 #10 July 16, 2004 Google a search for "barotrauma"... That'll put some info at your fingertips. Or just search here in the forums.... Lots of people out there jumping with known congestion and screwed there hearing...... And you didn't know about this before jumping????? good luck, Buck
jheadley 0 #11 July 18, 2004 My ears hurt after my first tandem a lot. The second one, only a tiny bit, and the rest of my jumps they didn't hurt at all. If you decide to continue the sport I'm sure you'll be fine, but go see a doctor and like they said, don't jump with a head cold. I had a bad cold one time on a commercial plane ride and when I was landing, I seriously thought my head was going to explode. I'm a SCUBA diver so I know how to equalize the pressure, and when I did, my ears whistled! Can anyone explain why your ears pop when you drive down a mountain or descent in a plane but they don't pop when you plummet through the sky?
