steve1 5 #27 April 30, 2006 QuoteQuote It's a blessing on night jumps when you have equipment because when you lower it and go to half brakes you can feel it hit the ground and finish your flare to soften the landing. ............................................... In the olden days, (about 1970), when static line jumping rounds, we were trained to drop our equipment (on a lowering line),at about tree top level. I guess the thinking behind that was to avoid oscillating under a round canopy. And as I mentioned on two night jumps it was so black out, that I crashed in before I even saw the ground, (without dropping anything). So, I'm just curious...can you drop your equipment higher when jumping a square?...Steve1
 riggerrob 643 #28 April 30, 2006 What size canopies (WL) would you typically use on these jumps? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HAHO and HALO canopies are usually huge squares (300 to 370 square feet). If they are jumping with a tandem bundle - up to 1,000 pounds - they will jump 500 square foot or larger (?) canopies. Small groups: Search and Rescue, Pathfinders, HALO, HAHO, and most Special Forces use large square canopies. However, if you are dropping large hundreds at a time - from below 1,000 feet - you are better off using non-steerable round canopies. Many paratroopers are not bright enough to steer a canopy - without colliding with their buddies - and from 500 feet, there is precious little time to steer anyways. sgt_ludy 0 #30 April 30, 2006 ...and round canopies still deploy faster than square ones do.
