JeepDiver 0 #5 April 22, 2006 Appears to be a man with a plan. Not crazy at all. All done for charity. Very respectable. I wish him well. Mostjumps is not about setting a new World Record. It is about helping make a difference in the lives of special children. All funds raised will be split among two organizations the United States Special Olympics and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. 1st Guinness World Record, 31 May 1995 for 331 jumps in 24 hours at Raeford, NC. 2nd Guinness World Record, 27 November 1997 for 384 jumps in 24 hours at the Somerton Airport, AZ. 3rd Guinness World Record, 13 November 1999 for 476 jumps in 24 hours at the Somerton Airport, AZ. 4th Guinness World Record, 11 November 2003 for 534 jumps in 24 hours at Elsinore, CA. NlghtJumper 0 #9 April 22, 2006 How is this possible? I may not know enough but to me it just doesnt add up. To complete 600 jumps in 24 hours, he would have to do 25 skydives every hour [assuming that he will be going non-stop for all 24 hours]. But to get the 25 jumps in one hour, he has 2.4 minutes to complete each skydive. That is barely enough time to just load the plane and maybe get off the ground, let alone have completed the entire skydive. And at what altitude does he plan on jumping from? I mean, is he allowed to have mulitiple people jumping with him, completeing the numbers for him or something? Because then he wouldn't be the sole record holder. I might be reading too much into it, but it just doesnt add up to me. Can anyone help me better understand this? nate_1979 9 #11 April 22, 2006 You got it, he's going to be doing one skydive every 2.4 minutes for 24 hours... This is made possible (mabey) with a team of people, basicly runs out of used gear and into the plane while putting new gear on without stopping, then it's up to 2100 feet, out do it again... Be bad ass if he pulls it off. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't. ZigZagMarquis 9 #14 April 22, 2006 The way it goes, you have to go to at least 2K for it to be legal. When Jay did it last, at Elsinore, he was using Turbine Porters, even a good Cessna is just too slow. If the weather hadn't been crappy... a numerous number of the jumps at Elsinore were in the rain... and if he hadn't lost something like 45 minutes to an hour or so to a broke airplane, he might have gotten 600 jumps in then. Jay is a remarkable person.

Jay is a remarkable person. It rained from around 10:00 PM until 8:00 AM the next morning. All the jumps were from 2100 feet and when Zing was flying the turn around time was just over 2 minutes. And you are right Tim, he lost at least 20/25 jumps when one of the planes when down. And he really did 535 but the last one did not count because time ran out when he was under canopy. If anyone doubts his ability to pull this off please PM me and we can discuss a small wager. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
BigM 2 #19 April 23, 2006 I had the privilege of meeting and jumping with Jay last year... and talking to him about the record attempts. He did use a Porter last time...ONE Porter! (another was around in case of mechanical problems) He lands right next to where the Porter stops. He has a very special configuration on his canopies that allow him to pull down on the front risers with minimal effort (thus getting out of the sky faster). He is basically coming out of the rig as he is landing and people are running next to him holding another rig like an open coat for him to get into. Seems like he told me (from his foot touching down to him sitting in the plane) they were averaging about 8.5 seconds. I asked him what he thought the saturation point was for this record and he thought this was about it. He also said that make it or not, this was his last run at it. He is in tremendous athletic condition but he is turning 50 and this is a monumental undertaking. Everyone wishes him success but more than that a very SAFE attempt. Get 'em Jay. ltdiver 3 #20 April 23, 2006 Saw Jay just this month here at Perris. He was following up a Coach's Course with an AFFI Course right on it's heels. Yes, he is -still- in remarkable shape and will definitely set a new record (again) this time around. He, -and- his team, were a remarkable thing in action last time he set the record at Elsinore. Multiple packers, timers, judges, pilots, tag-teams, runners, maintenance, the DZ, etc etc etc. You have to see this poetry in motion to even -try- to understand it. It's more teamwork than most pro teams put into a year to make it happen. All in one night. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
Yossarian 0 #21 April 23, 2006 sounds very dangerous to me, considering a fair proportion of them will be night jumps, hopefully hes got enough rigs there that theyre not rushed pack jobs, but hell be tired, and imagine having a total at night on jump 599 from 2000ft whilst absolutely shattered. all it takes is during one of those 600 jumps to misroute your chest-strap during the 8.5sec kit-up. im not saying hes not a very capable man and can pull it off safely, im just saying theres a ALOT more room for error
packerboy 3 #22 April 23, 2006 I'm sure he's not the only one checking his chest strap, and I'm sure all the people involved in making this safe are not doing the whole 24 hours in one go. There must be shifts. I bet if he had a total on jump 599 at night he would be very quick to realize it. Keep in mind he is in the zone of having already had 599 parachute openings that day. Something going different would be very obvious. His reaction time would be a bit slower after 20 hours but still quick enough I think. Safety would be the #1 concern with something of this magnitude, and well thought out. edited to say: 598 parachute openings at the least for all those technical math buttheads around here. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

BigM 2 #25 April 23, 2006 Quoteimagine having a total at night on jump 599 Jay does indeed start his jumping near sunset. He also has a complete gear checking crew... medical staff that accompanies him on he plane (checking vitals and much more). Like a previous post said, it is difficult to imagine what goes into this. If it can be done, Jay will "Get 'R Done!" (Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one) "When I die, I want to go like my grandmother, who died peacefully in her sleep.
