Peej 0 #26 February 15, 2006 It took me a full six months from the date of my accident to the time i was back jumping. I spent six weeks in a knee length cast and about 8 weeks total on crutches. I started physio the day after my cast came off though... Believe me man, you don't want to rush coming back and risk re-injuring yourself. The sky will always be there, listen to your docs and physio therapists, take your time and let your body heal. Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
bradcurn 0 #27 February 15, 2006 Hi Chantal I heard about your injury, how's it going with the recovery? I assume from the post that you are now carrying some metal yourself. What's the prognosis from the docs on the length of time before you come back? Oh, and what the hell happened? I've heard some fragments but not the whole story. Anyway, I hope you recover quickly and come back to play. Cheers Bradley
Orange1 0 #28 February 15, 2006 hiya brad i'll email you the details later! just got back from doc - i have just got 2 screws ("we could only put 2 in because that's all the bone that was left") and a titanium plate, but he reckons the screws can come out pretty soon (v close to the skin) he said 9 months before i can jump again , though markb reckons i need to find someone with more experience of skydivers to give me a shorter prognosis Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. bradcurn 0 #29 February 15, 2006 Sounds like Mark's suggesting you shop around till you hear the answer you like. My view would be to get a second opinion, but if it matches what your doc is saying, then BELIEVE it! I came back quicker than I was advised to do when I broke my collar bone and I think now that I didn't let it heal properly. It still bothers me and now I wish I had listened to the advice. Hope you recover soon and fully. Cheers Bradley
Dumpster 0 #30 February 15, 2006 That x-ray look nearly identical to mine - Except I've two more screws, one running through the plate into the other bone and one running front-to-back. I botched up an otherwise normal landing in November 2004, and was back in the air on Safety Day March 2005. I was REALLY nervous on that first load - Not being current and the accident still fresh in my mind. Easy Does It

bradcurn 0 #32 February 15, 2006 Yeah, I didn't think of that. Probably a good idea to chat to an MD who actually understands the sport (if you can find such an animal). Cheers Bradley
Eule 0 #33 February 15, 2006 QuoteHere's just two pics. What are those sets of concentric rings up by your hip? I don't mean the ones that are looped around the replacement upper femur - the ones I mean almost look like tiny pilot chute springs. EulePLF does not stand for Please Land on Face. ZigZagMarquis 9 #34 February 15, 2006 ... used to have it... 8 screws and a plate to put back together a Tib / Fib Break at around 900-and some jumps ... had it taken out just short of 10 months after it went in...

Those x-rays were taken a day after surgery and I still had an external drain in. I just happened to be laying on it when they took the x-rays. The springs are inside the drain. darnknit 0 #36 February 15, 2006 Quote Now I keep the rod in my gear bag and beat on other jumpers that choose to get the in the corner on their landings. that is actually a great way to get their attention. i like that alot blue stuff, p.j. pulling is cool. keep it in the skin

What did you break? I only broke the fibula (thank goodness it wasn't a tib/fib fracture). I also snapped the ankle ligaments. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I don't think it will ever let me forget about it. I was told by my orthopedic surgeon to take Aleve every day, whether i'm in pain or not. I take it just once a day in the morning. It's made a huge difference. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!

murps2000 86 #42 February 17, 2006 Did you do a little twist job on your ankle, or something? Your damage sounds identical to mine. Seeing my foot pointing toward 2 o'clock relative to my leg was a bit unsettling until I jerked it back into place a fraction of a second later. Then it just hurt. Attached is my very similar x-ray, then a nice photo of the removal of the big screw, and finally, said screw. (Incidently, as a professional metal fabricator, I have to say it is the finest piece of stainless I have ever held) I got my damage on April 1st (Ah, the irony) of last year at the GLC. Jim and Duane both picked me up at the ER in Lake Isabella. Great guys, those two. From what I hear, though, I think Jim may want his crutches back. MooChooser 0 #44 February 17, 2006 I just had mine taken out on wednesday. I did have a plate and 6 screws in the fib and 2 big screws in the tib (or is it the other way around?) I hope it was worth it.
ArchMohr 0 #45 April 21, 2006 Plate w/ 6 screws in ankle of left leg after slipping on ice 3 years ago. One month ago, twisted wrong IN plane 3 seconds before exit (didn't go out), spiral fracture tib and fib. Titanium rod in tibia. Stretching and exercising leg everyday (after threat of 10# weight on knee to straighten leg). Ready to jump; 1 more month to wait at least.

Skymonkey13 0 #47 April 22, 2006 My injury was non-skydiving related. It happened on the job. Working for a Heavy Hauling Company moving a 3500 pound safe down some stairs when all hell broke loose. Ended up at the bottom of a flight of stairs with the 3500 pound safe on top of me after riding it down. It took over 3 hours for the Fire Department and a Heavy Hauling crew set up a gantry to get the safe off me. Ended up with 2 steel plates and 4 steel screws in my back, L-5 S-1 i believe. After 2 operations and a bone graph. This was before i ever made my first jump and the only thing it does as far as jumping is keep me from doing RW as it is too painfull to hold a hard arch to fall with the fat boys. So i mostly do just fun jumps, which is fine by me, at least i can still jump. :)
adrenalinejunki 0 #48 April 22, 2006 Does that include drunken skydiver parties with broken bones? I have had 13 broken bones and none were skydiving related, and no they did'nt all happen at once. __________________________________________________What's the worst that can happen? EMSchick98 0 #49 April 22, 2006 No metal... but broken pelvis jump #8 Moral learned: Don't flare high! (at least I didn't let it up!) Not so bad... the people at ASC (no I don't normally jump there) where actually WONDERFUL taking care of me... I sat there for 3 days before Tammi Carbone finally kidnapped me and made me go to the hospital. Thanks girl! Unfortunately with the winter weather in Chicago... no jumping once I healed and with the job and traveling I am going to have to wait until June to get recurrent... Can't wait to get back on the horse though! edited cause I forgot a ")" "me you alcohol a rig a car and a bunch of planes what could posibly go wrong" - Pruitt
ArchMohr 0 #50 April 26, 2006 I always tell people I didn't do it skydiving....I wasn't out of the plane! I liken it to someone getting out of their vehicle to go play golf and breaking a leg, only difference is my vehicle is a plane and I definitely wasn't going to play golf! I'm shooting for Memorial Weekend to jump again, but everyone at the DZ looks at me like I'm crazy. It'll be 9 weeks by then and the doctor said 2 months, so I'm thinking positive.....or I'm in severe denial.
