CanuckInUSA 0 #1 April 24, 2006 I just wanted to share a Farmer McFriendly story with you folks just so that we know that they're not all Farmer McNasty's out there. This afternoon I was making a skydive at Pacific Skydivers in Pitt Meadows BC when my JVX 96 tried to kill me with a violent spinning mal and I cut the bitch away. I followed my canopy down (the damn thing cost me $2600 so of course I want to make sure I recover it) and sort of watched where my freebag landed as well. But myself and my canopy didn't land all that close to my freebag. Anyway I approached Farmer McFriendly and asked him if he saw something fall from the sky and described what had just happened to me and described what a freebag was and what it looked like. While I was searching one field over I heard someone call out my name (Farmer McFriendly) and that he had found my freebag. He found it in a tree (a tall 40 footer with a very narrow trunk, not the type of tree you just climb). Well if you can believe it, Farmer McFriendly broke out his chain saw and cut the tree down so that I could be reunited with my freebag. After thanking him and joking with him that we better not tell the environmentalists about this, I asked them (him and his wife) if they liked wine as I would be happy to buy them a bottle. They said I didn't need to do this, but next week when I head back to the DZ to retrieve my container, I will stop by and give them a bottle anyway. Can you believe it, Farmer McFriendly actually cut down a tree so that I could retrieve my freebag. I guess they're not all McNastys huh? NWFlyer 2 #3 April 24, 2006 Steve - glad to hear that you're okay and your gear was all recovered. It's nice to see good relations with the dropzone neighbors for a change. Hope we'll see you down in our neck of the woods this summer. We've got new dropzones galore ... definitely get down and check it out!"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. jumpslo 0 #4 April 24, 2006 thats awesome! can't believe he cut down the tree. probably use it for firewood. glad to see your okay. "Good rule of thumb; is what you are doing the EASIEST for You? johnny1488 1 #5 April 24, 2006 We have a McNasty to our east and a McFriendly to our south. Our DZ had a "barn raising boogie" about 10 years ago when his burnt down. All the jumpers hung out and helped him put up a new barn. On any given load he is happy to let us land there (we call it the student field for its conditions on directional windy days) and lets us wait with the bus to pick people up. Just dont scare the horses!! Amazingly enough, they are not all out to get us!! Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Vectracide 0 #6 April 24, 2006 Damn Steve, why couldn't of you had that mal yesterday? Maybe I could have won that swoop comp. Course, you would have probably swooped it with your reserve anyways. Damn, I always miss the "good" days. Was it a H&P? Or did they fix the KA so you could get some alti? ------------------------------ Controlled and Deliberate..... piisfish 140 #7 April 24, 2006 Would be even cooler if you went there and planted a new tree to replace "yours". A symbol of peace and friendship... CanuckInUSA 0 #8 April 24, 2006 Quote Would be even cooler if you went there and planted a new tree to replace "yours". That's a good idea except that this guy's property is full of trees. But a good idea nonetheless. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
CanuckInUSA 0 #9 April 24, 2006 QuoteWas it a H&P? Or did they fix the KA so you could get some alti? It was a full altitude Cessna 206 jump as the KA is still down. My first terminal jump of the day also had a squirely opening (it wanted to go but I was on my risers before it took off), the 2nd jump sub-terminal was a nice opening and then this 3rd jump another full altitude terminal jump just went to shit right off of the bat. I tried to control it (immediately popping both brakes in case I had a premature brake fire), but the canopy just keep spinning and spinning and I said #### it I'm out of here. magnio 0 #10 April 24, 2006 During summer, when there are too few people to jump at the regular DZ, we jump at a farm not far from the regional airport. As long as we land in the grass fields and generally try to follow the field tracks out of the field rather than using shortest path he's happy with us. Apparently he lets us use his fields to annoy his neighbours - they probably don't like the plane, so I think he enjoys annoying them a bit ;-) (I don't think it's very serious, though, usually they are at nice terms, and when I was stuck in a tree in someone's forest last spring, a bunch of them went out with ropes and latters to get me down.) (And I *think* they weren't after *me* with them ;-))
Andrewwhyte 1 #11 April 25, 2006 The presence of Farmer Mcfriendly in Pitt Meadows is no accident. Ever since Ian Flanagan bought Pacific Skydivers he has made being a good neighbour a high priority. No complaint gets ignored, and when there is property damage he simply writes a cheque and writes it off as part of the cost of doing business. When the local Deer Farmer told him the price of his customers landing out in his field was a contribution to Ducks Unlimited he made a contribution in kind for years afterward. When ATC was wary of us landing on the airport or so close to Vancouver International he issued a standing invite to all the controllers for a free fam flight and/or tandem. All controllers who take him up on the tandem are offered free instruction. Over the years these and other initiatives have cost him a few thousand bucks and saved him priceless amounts in headache remedies. The last time I had a mal in Pitt Meadows the Main and freebag landed in town about a block apart. By the time I got my passenger in the hanger and drove over to the main a guy had pulled the canopy off the trailer it landed on and sent his son down the street to get the freebag. They were folded neatly by the curb waiting for me. BTW Flanagan is going to Lodi tomorrow to get the other KA.

So I better figure something out. Oh and I wasn't wearing any added weight. I think I gained a few extra lbs this winter and my 20 lb weight belt (which isn't adjustable) will put me over the new limits. So I have been jumping without it.
