Can gaffer's tape be bought at a local hardware store? I need some and do not want to have to order it.

Gaffers tape does not leave any sticky residue like electrical and duct tape does. It is also a cloth tape not a plastic.

My local camera store back in Colorado sold black gaffers tape for $14.50 and colored gaffers tape for $18.

edit - that was their price for a 60 yard roll.

If you search around on-line (google "gaffer's tape" or "permacel") you'll end up paying close to $20 (including shipping) for a 60yd roll. I've never been able to find gaffer's tape in any Lowe's Home Improvement type store.

One roll will probably last you years (as long as you're not giving it away to friends).

We use it like water in the concert lighting business to tape stuff, like cables to the stage or building cable bundles...

I can get it for $8 a roll... I will gladly sell it to you for $40!

Permacel is a brand of tape... Like a Hoover is to vacs or Kleenex is to facial tissue.

It hates also being in a car with sun hitting it and baking it... The glue makes it super stiff and hard to get off the roll. It also hates water, ranges from getting gooey to leaving residue.

It will leave residue all over stuff, especially if that stuff got warm...

It is really designed to be a temporary tape used to label a road case, tape cables to the ground, etc... After months it really deteriorates...

I usually buy my gaff tape online via theatre supply shops. However a lot of the suggestions above seem to be cheaper options...but I usually buy it with stage cord, so it's a better deal for me.

If there’s a stage supply store in town (most likely bigger cities), you can find it there. I buy in locally for $8 or $10.

I asked a commercial type hardware supplier to quote me 3M gaffers (whatever their part number is), he said that they could buy it for me, but only in case quantity. I’d have to go into the tape business to justify buying a case of it!

Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else.
