Recommended Posts

I found a skydiving school in New Zealand (through this site actually)

http://www.skydiving.co.nz/

it says you can get a career in commercial skydiving

I was interested but wanted to know if anybody else knew anything about it?

thanks

It's been discussed on here before ... use the "search posts" function. Essentially it's packaging what you can get from any dropzone in the world. Might wind up being a good deal, might not.

That's true! The only catch is you have to start with a decent amount of money, because you won't make much in the career itself.

:DHow to make a million dollars in skydiving....
...start with $2million....

I knew a couple of people going to do it from the UK. One dropped out cos she was told she was too experienced already (the other guy was more experienced, but did it anyway afaik, havent heard from him in a while).

Its NZ$9000 up front, which includes AFF, 200 jumps, FS and FF coaching, learning how to fly camera, packing, how to run a DZ and some push towards becoming a S/L instructor. Its aimed at people who have never jumped or very few jumps before. My friend had >200 jumps and could already FF and had her FS1.

UK Skydiver for all your UK skydiving needs.

One thing I learned in life -- when hobbies become work - they're usually not as much fun. There is always the exception to the rule, but most of the "full time" skydivers don't make much money. They live in trailors and at times in their cars. When they weather sucks, or the plane is down or YOU are down (illness or injury) you don't get paid.

You may be one of the FEW who can make a liveable wage skydiving. But usually that is not the case. The must better option is get an education - get a good job and have free time and money to skydive.

Or you can earn your way into making the hobby pay for itself. Get ratings, fly video, pack, rig, etc. I've seen way too many people (including myself at times) lose the love we had when we started because our hobby becomes a job. Just my two cents worth.:P

If you are really interested in making money skydiving:

1. Get every rating you can. At minimum this means AFF and tandem; SL, IAD and multiple tandem rig checkouts help. Get your rigger's ticket. At least senior; master would help but takes longer.

2. Get a camera and get good at flying it. This means minimum 100 jumps videoing 4 way and RW. (Freefly video is good to know, but doesn't help you as much when you are videoing tandems.) Nowadays that generally means a 5+ megapixel still camera and a digital camcorder.

With the above skills you should have a good shot at getting a job at even a busy skydiving center. It will take a while to 'progress through the ranks' and get the better jobs; don't give up.
