20-25 Knots Winds

It was a sunny winter day with east wind (5-10 knots). We jumped at 10.000' and I did a fun FF jump and deployed at 3.000'. Normal navegation and when I was at 700' the wind came from southeast with 20-25 knots. I was backing up and had to pull the front risers to cut the wind. I landed 3 feet from the tree line (between two of them) that separate the land area from the street. The tail of my canopy got stucked in the trees. The wind was not constant (I don´t know the name in english) and there were a lot of turbulence and at 400' I had to choose between the trees (it was small ones) or side land in a short spot behind the tree lines (more turbulence). Turning and land with tail wind was almost impossible cause there were a wall there.

Only three (including me) of the 7 jumpers landed in the land area. One of them landed at the end of the airport run (one plane took off and had to turn quickly to avoid running over the skydiver).

What would you do? The trees, side land?

The pilot in me says that I would probably go for the tree, as cross wind landing with turbulence from 20-25 knot winds sounds like a canopy stall waiting to happen.

Btw, I think the word you were looking for is the wind was gusting.



I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

The wall wasn't 700 feet tall was it?;) With your experience perhaps a short run to an open area would have been appropriate. But with your experience that may have been hard to realize.

If in doubt about the landing and not knowing whether you were going to clear the obstacles, get away from them. If there was an open field on the other side of the wall, that may have been where you should have been. Don't be afraid to give up on the dropzone if making it is unsure and an alternative is sure and safe. A lot of people have been killed and injured trying to make it back to the DZ. Your situation was different, you were trying to stay AT the DZ but similar state of mind in play. If it was a forest downwind of the wall, well you probably did the best you could.
