When you were (or are) a student......

Recommended Posts

I had a tough time with stable exits, so I'd say that was my greatest fear when I was a student. Learning to really "trust the arch" was a wonderful breakthrough for me.

It was the fear of the unknown. I had very minor nervousness on the first jump... I still haven't figured out why I wasn't more scared. It disappeared by the second jump and it's weirding me out. I'm just not nervous anymore... out of the Otter.

My Skyvan exit had me nervous, but that was another "fear of the unknown" thing. Doesn't phase me anymore.

Stability had me worried, but I solved that with 10 minutes of tunnel time. Again, fear of the unknown.

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to land solo, but looking at the horizon to judge altitude actually works. Fear of the unknown.

See a trend? ;)
I really don't know what I'm talking about.

My first clear and pull at 3500ft after AFF...damn..that seemed so low :$..really freaked me out...Especially because my first c&p wasn't good enough according to the jumpmaster and I had to repeat it [:/]..

Landing at a certain point, close to it. I feel very comfortable in freefall, but last time I had to do 4 90degree turns, 2 180degree turns, and 2 360degree turns, plus the pilot dropped us a little far, so ended up decending real quick because of the turns and had to land downwind because of being too low. Probably the worst jump so far for me, but now I now I'm done with having to do 8 turns before landing and know to pay more attention to the alti

Performance anxiety. I wanted to do everything perfect the first time through.

Oh, and to keep from flipping over with a 60 pound student rig on my back....:P Never did, but think military gear with a Goliath 378 square foot canopy and a round reserve on my back! :S

Wasnt scared at all on the first 5 jumps last year. Then I started getting more and more freaked out each jump, mostly of the door, then just about the exit itself.

This year no such problem except on the recurrency after the 6 month layoff.

Now I just worry about the money situation or making a stupid decision at some point.

TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

.... what was your greatest fear?

Not finding throw-out handle. You spend all your time LOOKING for stuff before you grab and/or pull, so when I had to grab something I couldn't see...

My five second delay was more like a 5 tenths of a second delay. It was a little embarrassing at the time. I am not sure I cleared the step of that Cessna B|

My first jump was the calmest. I was sitting shitting myself and was looking around the plane at all the faces. Then the S/L students went out, some were great and some screamed on the way out. At that point i smiled and realised we are all on the same boat and to chill out. I was confident in my instructors and leaped out nicely.

Now im on my own i shit myself :|

My main fear isn't the parachute malfunctioning, its going unstable.

Falling off the the strut because my hands were sweating so bad. I didnt want to fall off.

hehe this reminds me of one of the later levels of AFF. I didnt have a good grip of the plane and my fingers were slowly slipping, losing my grip and in a panic I said to my JM "I'm gonna fall out!!" hehe. :D When we landed he paid out on me so much. He's now our cameraman for the 4 way team I'm in. Thankfully he doesnt bring it up too often hehe. :$

Hell I got over 3,000 skydives and I'm still scared right before I exit that plane every time.

I worried when I had about 100 jumps that there was some thing wrong with me cause I was still scared. I went to the most respected person on the DZ and sat down and had a nice heart to heart talk with him. He told me that the second I stop being scared, I better leave the sport.

I'd call it "harness fear." I had occasions of major fear about being insecure in the harness, and falling out, or it breaking, or something. Almost always it was when under canopy. I think it was never an issue in freefall, or when opening, just when I was flying my canopy around did I worry about it.

This is the dumbest thing, but I was afraid of falling out of the plane! Sticking my head out the door, kneeling near the open door, scared me so bad. What's dumb is in about 30 sec. I was going to leave willingly and if I fell out I do have a parchute! But for some reason I was afraid!

My first jump was THE peak experience of my life. I no longer felt afraid of anything. I think skydiving brought all the deepest fears to the surface and made them go away.

I am just afraid of having my life cut short and dying without first having some real cool skydiving experiences.

A funny one. I did one tandem and then continued on a static line progression. My greatest fear before my first static line jump was that I wouldn't be able to climb out and hold onto the strut because of the airspeed. I was pretty worried about being blown off :D
